I got off work today and went out to eat at a buffet with my boyfriend. 5 minutes after we sat down to eat, his cell phone rings and all the way thru the main course and salad, he talked and talked and talked to his son.
I told him it was rude and he needed to shut the thing off next time. He got mad at me and gave me dirty looks. The whole point was he had to drive 60 miles to work. We met 24 miles away from home in passing. I was getting off work while he was going and it is the only time we ever see each other.
Am I being petty. or is it rude to talk on a cell phone while having dinner with someone else?
His son is 31 yrs old and has 3 children and he can see him all weekend if he wants while I am at work.

I raised 2 kids alone. I raised them to be respectful. and I do not talk to them on the cell phone at meal time or when I am with a guest. This is called respect. We are not trailer trash. If they are having a medical emergency, they are welcome to talk to me, but just to chit chat when I am in someone elses company is just wrong. I am a professional and I shut my phone off at the table.

Yes. A call lasting a few minutes would, in my opinion, be reasonable, but beyond that it's just plain rude.

Extreemly Rude behaivor on his part, since his chid is 31 years old and he has children of his own. And then he got mad at you because you and gave you dirty looks, yea I'd be upset too. Heck, I'd have gotten up and left him to have all the talking time he wanted. After all he could have told his son that he'd call him back, after he knew that it wasn't an emergency. Maybe he just wants you to get mad and he wants you out of his life and this is his way of doing it!!
You took the time to be with him and he talked on the phone
the entire time, that just seems so rude to me. I'd have asked him if it was an emergency, if he had told me no that it isn't then I'd have gotten up and left. I wouldn't put up with that and he should have told his son that he would call him later, instead of doing that to you. His son is certainly old enough to understand that he was in the middle of some thing that should have been important to him too.
I would talk with him and let him know how hurt that I was and if he didn't get it, I'd give him some thing to think about. I would leave him and find some one who has some respect for me, Since it didn't seem like it was an emergency as I said I'd have left, I wouldn't sit there and put up with that. You wanted to spend some time with him, and obviously that was his plan as well. However once his phone rang he should have either said let me see if this is an emergency or not. He could have asked his son if it was an emergency, when he was told that it wasn't he should have told him I'll call you later. After all you didn't plan on listening to him talking with his son through out the meal, that had not been a part of your plans. I wonder if it had been a part of his plans, as he didn't even try to spend the time with you. He made the phone call such a priority to him, and he tossed you on the back burner. Yes, I would have left.
Find some one else who wants to be with you. Leave this man as he seems so insensitive to your needs, and even to the fact that both of you deserved time together and you made the time to be with him and he blew you off for a phone call.

That one is tough. If it was anyone other than his children I would say absolutely it was rude but being it was a child, Im torn. Was the child having an issue? If so then I think he did the right thing. Kids need their parents' support at random times. If he was just chatting it up with random convo and the kids are a little older I think he should have said that he would return their call in 30-45 minutes.
Im sure his kids will always come first.

She was very rude and discourteous to her date. If she had an emergency and needed to talk on her cell, then she should have gotten up and gone outside the restaurant to talk. Someone from one of the neighboring tables should have alerted the staff that she was disrupting everyone's dinner. Sometimes people like her need to be "shamed" into behaving correctly. I hope that guy dumped her by the way...

Rude. I'll cut him a LITTLE slack because it was his family, but if it wasn't an emergency he should have said I'll call you back in about a half hour or whatever. I got fried on Mother's Day because my adult son and his girl friend were texting all day long despite the fact that he, my other son and me were visiting and hadn't really had a sit down since Christmas. My therapist said I should have said that I felt neglected when they were doing that rather than calling his girl friend obsessive (lol). (I wanted to make him mad.)

yes, that is rude of him to continue talking while the two of you trying to spend some time with each other. He should see if what his son had any thing important if not, that he would call him back. Talk to him about it and not at him, that will only make things worst between you too. If he fail to comply, the next time it happen just get up from the table and leave him siting there on the phone with his son.

Yes, it was enormously rude. Tell him if that's the way he wants to play it, the next time he's with his son, he has to talk to you on the phone for the same length of time. I think after the first course (the salad?) if he wasn't off the phone, I would have told him I hoped he and his son enjoyed the meal and walked out. But that's just me.

No, that isnt rude. Its his son. As long as hes not ignoring you or taking up most of the time on the phone. You shouldn't get mad at him or yell at him for it. Just say you dont like that you barley got to talk or something.

Yes, he was being rude if he can see his son all weekend. All of my kids know that if I am involved with something or at work that they had better leave a message and I'll get back to them when I'm done. I think he should have done the same.
