Because I'm really, really, really thinking I'd like to go. I've been to France and Jamaica, but never China, and am not exactly a seasoned world traveler. However, I love pandas, and this looks like volunteering in panda heaven.

Have you been there? Better yet, have you done anything like this? What should I think about before writing that big check and booking the time off?

Everyone's telling me about spicy food. I can handle spicy--one of my favorite sauces is zhoug, which is like pesto with jalapenos instead fo basil. I can pack Tums. My big concern is meat. I'm mostly vegetarian, and I don't want to end up *eating* panda or other animals when I'm there to help pandas. How do I look out for *that*?

I would go in a flash. I have been to Chong qing which is in sichuan province. Chong qing sorta means 'double happiness/celebration'..sichuan means 'four rivers'. I don't know about Panda heaven..the chinese view their animals completely differently than we do. I went to the Panda zoo in Beijing and could barely watch the creatures that were kept out in the blazing sun with no shade..and they sold toy guns for the children to shoot at the bears.....However, Sichuan province is miles away geographically from Beijing. I love the chinese people...I have tried for years and years to master their language...The country itself is beautiful. The culture very different from ours. If you can deal without a lot of western luxury's then go...ie no western toilets/different ideas of what is edible. I don't think you should pass up the opportunity...What is the absolute worst that can happen..you have to go home...it will have been the adventure of a lifetime. I don't know how much this costs. You will have much more difficulty if you do not speak mandarin or have access to a translator..however the chinese people are really kind and try very hard if you show the slightest need of help. You don't want to be 90 years old and think 'gee I wish I had done that'. If you need anymore information that I can supply please feel free to email me...I have been through a lot of china...but as far as Sichuan province goes only Chong qing and down the Yangtze River (which the chinese call Chong chuan..long river).

I am not famous with the source "zhoug", but fresh jalapenos is extremely spicy. If you can eat food cooked with jalapenos pepper with its seed, you will be absolutely OK with the spicy part in Sichuan. The Sichuan's spicy food really consists of "Ma" and "Spicy". The "Ma" part gives you a feeling that you won't feel your tongue. The most famous food is spicy hot pot. It is a pot of boiling hot soup (gas under the pot), and you put raw meat and vegetable into it. It is worth to try.

Mostly, you will eat pork, beef, chicken, duck and fish. It is unlikely you will eat some odd meat unless you asked for it. If you are a pure vegetarian, you can find place serves with no meat, there are enough buddish in China, and they eat only vegatable.

I have been to Sichuan, Chengdu, the food is wicked spicy, well, at least I thought it was, I have never been to the place you are thinking of but, it looks great, Sichuan once you get outside the big cities is an incredibly natural place of beauty, and generally China is a great place to come and see

i've been living in china for over 5 years. never been to si chuan, but have heard that it is a beautiful place. i love the food from there, but you should know that si chuan is famous for really spicy food. china is a fun place to travel, but can be difficult for an unseasoned traveler. that isn't to discourage you from coming here, however. you just need to be patient and have an open mind. if you have those things, you will love it here. if you just want to relax and have a quiet holiday, you'd do better to find an island in the pacific somewhere.
