It has several meanings. Mischievous, naughty.. but it can also mean funny, witty..

It can be used in a good or a bad way, depending on what you want to say.

It's like when you say someone is 'terrible'.. it doesn't always means he's a bad person..

Tremendo of course means tremendous. We always use this word to describe a child who is very precocious and who gets into everything, the kind you have to keep an eye on all the time. But it is always has a "dear to the heart" kind of conotation, because it's applied to kids who are basically very curious and full of fun.

Spanish speaking mothers often say: Ay, ¡este niño es tremendo!

I personally have never heard it used in a negative way.

I usually hear the word "tremendo" used in referring, for example, to a young child, "Es (or Está) tremendo".

In this case it usually means that the child is full of energy, somewhat naughty, rambunctious, not easily controlled. It can be said in a negative way (as in the speaker not especially condoning the behavior) or merely as a statement of fact that this is the way the child is.

It is an adjective and can mean tremendous or terrible. So, overall I would say its not really positive.
