im going to mexico and i need to go to church and ask the priest when masses are. hopefully i can ask if he speaks english and if he does i can ask him in english. but i want to greet him like "hola padre, hablas ingles(i think thats how u spell english in spanish)? then say i am from the US and i dont speak spanish? then he would say yes i speak english and continue the conversation in english

You didn´t ask, but I´ll comment anyway. In speaking with a priest here in Mexico, I would use the "usted" form and not the "tú" form, so your question "Do you speak English?" should be "¿Habla usted el inglés?"

He is a formal second person so you really shouldn't use Tu, hence you shouldn't say Hablas but rather habla. The meaning of what I said was "Hello Father, can you speak English please" The reason I would recommend this is the phrase you initially wrote could come off as rude if it is caught off guard. Then you would say "Soy de Estados Unidos y no puedo hablar Ingles" Which mean I am from the US and I can't speak English. Yes, that is how you spell ingles. Try to avoid saying Hola to the padre. he is an elder and therefore deserves respect. In Spanish, hola is casual and mostly for friends. Older Spanish people do not use casual terms like that. Have fun in Mexico!

No language should be illegal in the US or in any other country. However, living in the US I do think that everyone should learn the English language. If I moved to another country, the first thing I would do is learn the language so that I could communicate properly with people that are natives of the country. I agree that most Americans only know English, myself included, whereas people from other cultures seem to be multi-lingual. I'm just not sure what other language I would like to learn first.
