Is it happening? What is the scientific evidence for global warming? Are humas accelerating this process? What can we do to try to slow it down, to minimize its effects on your life and the lives of future generations? Thanks.

Quick answers -

Yes it's happening.

Evidence - melting ice caps, receding glaciers, expanding deserts, rising sea levels, thawing permafrost - these are all things anyone can see for themselves. Scientific evidence from satellites, temperature records, half a billion years climate data and the simple physics of how greenhouse gases trap heat.

Humans are accelerating the process. Since we arrived on the planet temps have never been so hot, at not time in known history have temps risen so fast. We know greenhouse gases trap heat, we know we emitted 29 billion tons of them last year alone.

To slow it down - reduce fuel consumption, less intensive agriculture, use less and recycle more, alternative power generation.

All these points and more in detail on this website http://profend.com/global-warming/

Re previous answers...

CO2 rises and temp rises are a perfect correlation - CO2 has an atmospheric lifespan of 115 years, if all emissions stopped now the world would keep warming; also, whilst the US was in a depression the rest of the world wasn't. An understanding of the 'greenhouse effect' is required.

Earth does go through cycles - very slow ones, what we're seeing now is many times faster than has ever before been known. We're not coming out of an ice age - 18,000 years ago a glacial retreat commenced that lasted 7,500 years. We're actually going into an ice age and have been for 55 million years, the current warming is an upward spike in a generally downward trend.

Mars MIGHT be warming in SOME places - the south polar ice cap is melting, the north polar ice cap is expanding, happens every Martian season just as it does on Earth. Mars can't be compared to Earth as has virtually no atmosphere, what atmosphere there is is almost all CO2, temps are so cold the ice caps are frozen gas. In any event, there's 172 moons and planets in the solar system - on 167 of them no warming has been observed, if it were to do with the sun all planets and moons would warm.

Humans have affected the planet several times already - CFC's depleted the ozone layer, sulphur emissions caused acid rain and deforestation, pollution levels 50 years ago killed thousands - probably millions. The planet may be big but the atmosphere is small - so small that every bit of it has been breathed in and out many times over.

It is happening, but it's a normal, natural geological process. Good point in the post above about earth coming out of an ice age and warming up on it's own. It makes sense. Even mars is going thru global warming right now, it's polar icecaps are melting just like ours. Some scientists even say we are still coming out of the ice age.

I can't imagine that we are really accelerating it at all. Think about how much of the earth isn't inhabited by polluting humans. Could we really affect something as large as a whole entire planet, are we really THAT powerful? It's really hard to believe, especially with evidence that earth has been down this road long before we were here polluting it.

Instead of trying to prevent it, we need to learn how to prepare for it. One day people will catch on to this, I just wonder how long it will take.

Yes, I do believe it is happening. However, last I checked it was only at 1/2 a degree over the past century. In addition, the rise of this temperature average has not correlated the amount of human CO2 output during the past century. For instance, during the Great Depression, the world emitted less CO2 because the U.S. was in a tailspin. However, during that time, temperatures continued to rise. Thus, there does not necessarily appear to be a correlation between the two, not to mention a causation between CO2 creation and global warming. This leaves me questioning the cause and what exactly should be done about it.

If you wish to receive grant money for climate research, do you think that you'll get a cheque if you say," I need the grant, as I think that I can prove that the figures that the current paradigm is based upon are wrong" ? The great environmentalist, David Bellamy, has been silenced, and refused airtime. There is still no proven causative link between the amount of Co2 in the atmosphere, and an increase in global temperatures. The WWWF photographs of the polar bears swimming were taken in the Arctic summer; when the ice cap partially melts, as they couldn't get up to photograph in the winter. The ice was too thick! The East-Anglian uni research figures. "Oh! The figures don't match our expectations. Oh well. Keep quiet. Because we know that we are right." When the belief, and the faith is more important than squarely facing the legitimate doubts of a lot of non grant-supported scientists, science has been superceded by religious zealots. As Oliver Cromwell colourfully said." I pray thee, in the bowels of Christ, consider that thou mayest be wrong."

About global warming, the opinions does not come to the end. Some scientists insist that global warming is going on, whereas others not. The scientists to have opposite opinion about global warming say that the Earth warming and cold have repeated slowly since the Earth birth. give up anything that deals with electricity. pda, phones, computers, digital watch, ipod, car, bus, microwave, etc.

why give these up? they contribute to global warming.

the world is heating up, where ice caps and ice lands are starting to melt into water, the more they melt the more the ocean start rising, and land starts to sink. some countries have already gone down, there are islands near new zealand that will disappear in 10 years from now because of global warming. japan is sinking too, about 1 inch every year.

global warming is also messing with mother earth. some places where they use to get alot of rain, now barely gets a third of the rain they use to have. lands are starting to die up, turning good land for crops into sand. Africa has this problem.

Global warming is a problem of the present. Unfortunately we humans are the major contributors to this problem. Pollution is a main concern. There are many things we can do to help reduce this problem including: recycling, use less water, ride a bicycle or walk to work instead of driving whenever possible, recycle, buy efficient energy products,, plant a tree. Everyone can make a difference.

here let me tell you a story:

It started about one hundred years ago. The World is going to blow up cause it is so warm. I mean it has raised so much. I mean so very very very much. a whole .000006 c* in the last 100 years. What are we ever gonna do?

- lol - its true, though that the world has only warmed that much,in the past 100 years. and the other stuff about earth gonan blow up. its FASLE, a story.

Yes, 1 degree higher over the last 100 years. Did humans cause this? Doubtfull. The earth goes through temperature cycles...like say...an ice age? The earth warmed up all by itself without humans back then.
