"God helps those who help themselves" is not in the Bible and is not a Christian belief.

Aesop (mid-sixth century B.C.) who said, “The gods help them that help themselves.”

Euripides (ca. 480 BC–406 BC), a Greek philosopher, said, “Try first thyself, and after, call on God.”

George Herbert in the 17th century wrote, “Help thyself and God will help thee.”

We received our present version from Benjamin Franklin who wrote his Poor Richard's Almanack, “God helps those who help themselves.” [p. 175] (1736).

A more Christian saying would be, "Pray as though everything depended on God and act as if everything depended on you." -- St. Augustine (354-430)

+ About Poverty +

God loves and protects the poor.

But the poor will possess the land,
will delight in great prosperity.
The wicked plot against the just
and grind their teeth at them;
But the LORD laughs at them,
knowing their day is coming.
The wicked draw their swords;
they string their bows
To fell the poor and oppressed,
to slaughter those whose way is honest.
Their swords will pierce their own hearts;
their bows will be broken.
Better the poverty of the just
than the great wealth of the wicked.
- Psalm 37: 11-16

With love in Christ.

No, of course not! Read your Bible, and in there there is a story of a rich young man asking Jesus Christ what to do to inherit eternal life. Jesus in no uncertain way told him to sell up his posessions and give all his money to the poor. The man walked away feeling sad because he was so wealthy. Jesus then said to his disciples "It is much easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to inherit God's Kingdom."

Also, Jesus taught "Blessed are the poor, for the kingdom of heaven will belong to them."

Hope that answers your question. :-)
