I just had to fill out an application for customer service, and one of the questions was, what experience do you have with "cold calling."
What the heck is that?
Thanks everyone in advance

Cold Calling Experience

Cold calling is a form of sales. It's where you call someone to solicit a service. For example, when I was a mortgage loan officer we did this all the time. You go through the phone book and start calling people...it's considered "cold" call because these people have no connection to you or the company you work for. Also, nowadays, you have to make sure these people you are soliciting are not on the "Do Not Call List". Otherwise, it's considered illegal to call them if they are on the list and fines are involved.

Basically, it's really a hard sell. So, if you're not an "in your face" type person, than this isn't a good job for you. Sorry.

It has to do with calling customers out of the phone book or in person who have no previous knowledge of your business or have never expressed a desire for your product. Many salespeople have what they call "leads", which is a list of people that have contacted the company to request information about the product or service... so cold calling is considered more difficult because you are trying to drum up sales by approaching potential customers who likely are not interested in talking to a salesperson at that time. A good movie to watch to get an idea about leads and cold calling is "GlenGarry Glen Ross", but be forewarned... it has foul language.

Cold calling usually involves a sales job. When you cold call, you are attempting to make contact with a prospect that does not know you're calling; it is opposite of a warm call (a call to some one who knows you).

OMG run from that job!

Cold calling is when you call people out of the blue to sell them something. You know those horrible people who call you during dinner and try there best to sell you something and usually you either hang up on them or say something nasty to them?
Well this is cold calling!
Most experienced people run from this job! This is why they give the job to newbies. Doesn't pay so well either! Can you tell I did this as a teenager....horrible job!

It means rather than calling people/businesses that have shown an interest in your product/service--you are calling random people/businesses.

I have gotten a lot of cold calls. For example, I am not a homeowner, and people call me regarding 2nd mortgages, heating and cooling services, landscaping, etc.

Those same calls would not be considered "cold" if my landlord had used their services before, and they wanted to see if he needed/wanted them again.

It is when you call people and they are not expecting your call. Generally done in sales you make phone calls to people you are hoping to be your customers. It is typically not a fun activity since you get a lot of rejection.

The alternative would be warm calling where you are placing a call to someone who has shown interest in your product.

That means you attempt to gain a customer by calling them without any advance notice...basically like the people who call you during dinner to try and sell you something.
