Last time I checked, I consider myself, the hypothetical parent, responsible for my hypothetical child's moral development. That said, I would hire a moral person to babysit my child, granted that s/he would not use the two hours I'm at the movies to present a slideshow on "why you should believe what I believe." That's not what babysitting is for. Religion doesn't matter, nor does lack thereof.

Also, exposing my children to all kinds of different people would be important to me, as long as they weren't the child-molesting kinds of people. I'd pass on letting them babysit.

I see no reason why i wouldnt let an atheist babysit my child (if i had one). Don't get me wrong if i had a choice between an atheist and someone of my own religion I am clearly going to choose the person of my religion. Not because the other person is atheist but because the environment that my child would be in would be the same as if they were at my house. This will limit any confusion with my child. But no i have no problem with letting an atheist babysit my child as long as the person didnt try to push their atheism on my child...because my childs religion should be there choice.

I wouldn't let anyone babysit my child unless I knew them well and had a lot of confidence in them. One of the things that is happening in this generation is families that share babysitting
among themselves.

Let's say there are four families in the group with children. On
any night one family will take care of all the kids so the others can go out and have fun. This is rotated so that everyone will have free nights out. Since everyone is doing it for everyone else there is no babysitting fee, and the adults work together on providing food for all the kids.

Absolutely. I know many atheists and would rather they babysat than ANY of the fundie christians I know. At least if my kids got into a discussion with the atheist, they might learn some science. All they'd get from the christians is a bunch of bible verses that my children already know and the christian would get frustrated at the fact that my kids are perfectly capable of arguing circles around their religion.

Now for the truthful answer: it depends on the person. I don't just let anyone watch my children/grandchildren. I'd have to know this person well, and feel comfortable that they are capable of babysitting, caring for kids, etc... it has nothing to do with their religious inclinations or lack thereof.

I have some atheist friends that I would have no problem letting babysit my child, and some that I wouldn't. I also have some Christian friends who I would and some who I wouldn't.

If they are qualified to care for children, absolutely.

I'd have an atheist babysit a heck of a lot quicker than a fundamentalist.

yep... I've had wiccan sitters, christian sitters and atheist sitters before. And none of them minded me (the Jewish sitter) watching their kids, in fact, I have watched my wiccan friend's daughter for over a week once. We don't force our religion on each other's kids... although we generally pray at mealtime, I make sure the kids (theirs as well as mine) know they are not obligated to pray with me just because I do. (same when mine go to other's houses). The only time religion is brought up when babysitting is if I am asked to babysit during a holiday... in which case I just tell them what holiday it is, what we are going to do that night, and if they feel it's ok for their kids to join.. it's ok with me.

I'd let an atheist babysit my child long but I'd have to think long and hard about letting someone named Randall Flagg babysit my child.

And I'll stand by that one all day!

I would becasue as long as they rspect that i am not athiest and i dont want my kids to be, then i dont care. I am Christian, and like the other guy said, i would rather havean athiest babysitting my kids rather than a catholic preist because an Athiest wouldnt shove religion down your throat because they dont have a real religion.

i rest my case.
