They collide into my forehead, eyes, cheeks, ears, nose, right into my mouth and on my head and it's driving me crazy! Sometimes it really hurts! Short of wearing a full face shield, what the hell can I do?

Wear a helmet, you need it for safety anyways.
Wear a medical mask (like the one they use in hospitals). It will protect insects from getting in your nose and mouth as well as protect you from smog if you are riding on the street.
I am not sure what you can do about the ears but hopefully the helmet will help a little.
I wear glasses so I would recommend sports glasses if possible.

wear a helmet and the attachable glasses at go on the helmet there lie visors it will really help you and if its cold like in the winter you could wear a ski mask and ear muffs for your ears but its a sunny day wear a helmet with the visor thing. or you could wear a helmet with a visor that goes down to your chin and if you want to funny you could wear a bandanna or a docters mask and put socks on your ears but i doubt youll want to do that anyway good luck!

Wear ski-type goggles with your helmet if you just want to block your eyes. But if you want to block more than just your eyes, you may need to get a helmet with a face shield.

I use glasses which are slightly curved ( special sport glasses designed for biking, which will also give you some UV -rays protection ). They will cost you 100 US$ or maybe more if you take Adidas or something fancy ). I believe that should reduce your problems greatly !

Hold your head facing down and peddle really, really fast.
Soon the pain of insects hitting you in the face will not seem that bad after all.

Just a thought...
