basically what they do is sit you in the chair and tip you very far back, to the point where you feet are higher than your head (at least at my ortho's). then they size you for the things that actually hold the wire in place, not the brackets, i call them anchors, they go around your whole tooth, then they put cement stuff on it and put it on your tooth..the stuff is very bitter, then they will make sure your teeth are clean and then they cement on the brackets. then the orthodontist comes in and "bonds" them which is like putting this hair dryer looking thing against the brackets to make sure the cement is dry, they will put on the wire, and color, ask you if anything is poking, teach you how to floss and you will be on your way..its the same process for the bottom teeth.
i would suggest taking some Tylenol before you get them on and after you get them on because they will be sore for a few days.

SORRY FOR THIS VERY LONG REPLY!!
First of all, they make a plan for you, so you'll know if you'll need to pull out any teeth or such. Then you get an impression (sort of like playdo shoved into your mouth to get the imprint of your teeth, believe me, when I saw mine, I was so embarrassed.) Then you'll get pictures taken of the way you smile, and you'll be asked questions about any ear pain and such. They will X ray you and check to see if any tooth is growing. Of course, the pictures, questions, x rays, and impression come in any order.
Then the orthodontist will pull out teeth (if needed) and you'll probably have to wait a week until you get your braces.
On the day you'll get your braces, they put on the brackets (those silver circle-y things, sometimes colorful) and they will apply it with this cement thing. Then they apply the wire.
They will then probably give you a package that includes orthodontic wax (for putting on the bracket so it doesn't irritate you), floss and that little loopy thingy to help you floss with, some gel for canker sores, and possibly and electric toothbrush.
If you have a tooth on the bottom row that hits one of the brackets on the top row, then there's a high chance the orthodontist will give you a personal "biter". It's sort of like a retainer, but it covers you teeth and it's thicker, it prevent you from biting all the way down, so you wouldn't get a bracket falling off.
They will advise you to take Tylenol if there is any pain and they will give you other info.
It might not hurt on the day you get them, but don't run your tongue on the braces (I did, and I accidentally cut my tongue). Also, it will hurt the day after and so forth, but it will disappear. I advise you to drink soup or eat something really soft.
Best of luck!

first they took a mould of my teeth where they filled this mouthgard looking thing with a putty and made u bite into it then they cleaned my teeth and put these metal rings around my back teeth individualy ( like the top and bottom, so all in all you had four teeth which had these metal rings around them ) as the anchors for the braces. they then put little dots of glue on each tooth and then they attahed the braces to that then they put the wire through the pieces of metel they just glued on and held this in place with o rings which are the little colours you see on the braces and thats it.... the only time it hurt was when he was putting the rings around my back teeth and for like a week afterwoulds but after that my teeth were fine.........

I can't lie... It's very uncomfortable to actually get them on, but the process afterward is even harder! It all depends on what your condition is; for me, I had an overbite, and it was probably twice as worse...
Anyway, they put "smilers" in your mouth to keep your teeth visible the entire time. Then they clean them, brush them slightly with glue, and put the brackets on each tooth... There are huge brackets in the back that cover your molars, and that was probably the worst part. It hurts to get them shoved on... but the rest is easy! Relax, you won't even feel it until about two hours after they put it on. Then it really hurts. Use pain killer, trust me. But it goes away in a few days.
*I almost forgot... When you sit up with braces on for the first time, almost every single person I've talked to told me they drooled all over their front! ;) It takes some getting used to.
Hope that helped.

Im going for mine too in a few weaks. my mom explained it.
Apparently they make u bite dwn on this waxy stuff to measure your teeth. Then they give u a gely thing to bite down, and they fix the wores on your teeth. It should be painless. Then they take the gel out, and your ready to go! ask your friends though. Ive heard varried stories.
