I think it takes a certain maturity and a certain amount of courage to not believe the Bible in that sense. It is a journey some of us must take to get to the truth. Some of us start out screwed up and think we need to get straightened out, that is when we get religion, but after years of struggling with all that makes no sense there, that is when we take the next step of the journey and realize that there is no book of set truths, it is something we must discover within ourselves. This is where I am at in the journey so I am not aware yet of what comes next but I am aware that those who still believe the Bible is fact either are not brave enough to question it's validity or have ulterior motives (this is coming from someone who once said dozens of times: "the Bible says..."). i still like to read it though because of some of the very insightful passages. I am not an atheist. I consider myself a seeker of wisdom, truth, and goodness but I use my own heart and experiences to determine what that is. I have found good (and bad) in most religions that I have come in contact with and in Science and Atheism and Agnosticism. Each person decides for themself how their chosen belief system will mold them. I resent people from any religion or atheists who are not open minded enough to realize that it takes all kinds to make a world.

I don't know what an agnostic is any more than you know what a Nazarene Jew is, but I will pretend you did not see that.
I believe that what occurs is all the condrictions taught in our civilized world seems overwhelmingly confusing to a MULTITUDE of people. Who can know the truth?? Many truths??
Go to your quiet space, read, start at the beginning go all the way through, when you are finished read it again, you will be surprised at how new or different perceptions come to you. so many want to tell you what to believe. Read it for yourself, my understanding is most have little clue what they believe. oh and don't tell anyone you are reading they try to tell you what it means, or want to send you to some other book for advice. Start with Genesis, go through Revelations. It is a great read. so you get a clue of all the words keep the link as a gift. I would not go near a church, go at your pace take your time know in your own heart how to best answer your brother, and smile.
Shalom

ask about a god stopping the sun...

When I was kid, I loved to ask my minister questions about things that, to my young mind, made no sense when I read them in the Bible or more likely heard them in Sunday school. His answers were always rather bland and not a little aloof since, after all, he was the pastor and I was just a kid.

I remember asking about how humans and dinosaurs could coexist. After all, they had to be a part of the creation story, even though not mentioned specifically. Or why would dinosaurs be taken on the ark, only to go extinct such a short time after? And how do you cage a T-Rex or fit a Brontosaurus on such a boat, much less a pair of all sorts?

I got a lot of looks but very few answers. As the years went by, I concluded that none of it was either possible or even addressed in the Bible. I realized humans and dinosaurs had nothing in common (unless you live in the SE USA) and the pastor was either ignorant, deliberately deceptive or hung up somewhere in between himself, not knowing what to say to a kid. I honestly think I would have appreciated knowing what I suspect he knew, that being the story of Noah was fiction and I didn't have to worry about dinosaurs or polar bears for tha matter on the ark. It never happened.

I remember asking why the Bible, a book which had to know better since it was written by God himself, said Joshua raised his hands and the "sun stopped for the space of about a day," when clearly it would be the earth that stopped rotating? I asked him how oceans would not slop out of their basins in such a scenario and drown the whole world? I asked him if humans would not be cast into space by such a sudden stop of the entire planet? I even asked if this really happened, why did no one else on the whole planet notice it, or write about it? I got that dumb look again.

FACT:
1 : a thing done: as a obsolete : FEAT b : CRIME *accessory after the fact* c archaic : ACTION
2 archaic : PERFORMANCE, DOING
3 : the quality of being actual : ACTUALITY *a question of fact hinges on evidence*
4 a : something that has actual existence *space exploration is now a fact* b : an actual occurrence *prove the fact of damage*
5 : a piece of information presented as having objective reality

In what way does a compilation of half remembered (all the books were written many years or even centuries after the events) and poorly translated ( from a language with no vowels or punctuation) stories qualify as "fact"?

You said "The Bible" but there are plenty that make them conflict and contradict each other. Just because one says so doesn't make it so. Why do I get the feeling you and your little brother never even picked up the bible just swear its fact just by looking at its colored cover.. Welp if anything you just help me further believe your god is ignorant as you and people like you who believe in "him". That is no deity I would ever want to worship and for that matter you just cost a possible hundred, thousands, and even possibly more to convert.

Tell me what you think a FACT is, so that I can make sure we're discussing the same thing. Most say that the bible is BELIEF, which is DIFFERENT.

fact

Pronunciation: (fakt), [key]
—n.
1. something that actually exists; reality; truth: Your fears have no basis in fact.
2. something known to exist or to have happened: Space travel is now a fact.
3. a truth known by actual experience or observation; something known to be true: Scientists gather facts about plant growth.

My brother in Christ,

We are not going to make any progress spreading God's word if we as Chrsitians call non believers stupid and other insults. Remember that God appoints the time, the place, and the means by which each believer recieves salvation.

John 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

Ephesians 1:10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
Ephesians 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

2Thessalonians 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
2Thessalonians 2:14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Why doesn't your brother just believe the quran? or thousands of other religious texts, for that matter?

Stock answer:

Nobody can prove any gods, much less a specific god, exist; many people will tell you their god exists but no others, but will never be able to prove it, even if they think so. Some will threaten you with eternal pain or promise eternal joy to get you to believe in their god; these are all stories, created for people who were scared long before we understood the universe. Now we have no more reason for these superstitions.

I would tell him, "put yourself in the shoes of someone who was raised without God. What reason in the world would they have to believe that some ancient book is the 'word' of some 'devine' being, particularily if this devine being supposedly loves and saves and all they have seen from those who follow this book is misunderstanding, hate, and religeous genocide? These people have used reason to decide the bible is false. If you want to change their minds, practice love in the name of the lord and do not judge."

I used to be an agnostic too. I am a Christian now. Have been for twenty years.

Some people don't want to know God. They have no interest. The Bible says that God chooses who he wants and who he doesn't want. Only those who want to come to God are those he chose. The rest just don't care because he just doesn't want them.

Do you see eldad9's answer? That's a religious Atheist. It's like he's handing out The Watchtower! lol
