If you have asbergers that can be a great thing. It usually means that you are really smart and just might not socialize with other people easily. There are a lot of successful and well liked people with Asbergers, autism, and ADHD. You ARE NOT a freak....it actually sounds like your a kind, non-judgemental person that I would be proud to have in my family! When I was in HS, I got called all kinds of names, and today, I'm 31...really old...and I never even see the people that called me names anymore! But I still have one true friend from way back when and now we laugh at all the "cool" people that now we see are no better than us.
ADHD, Autism (including Asbergers), and other mental illnesses like BiPolar Disorder do run in families. But the most important thing is that if your teacher thinks you are, to get tested and see, b/c there is tons of help out there that will help you deal with the people at school. Do a search on Asbergers (maybe spelled Aspbergers) or high-functioning autism and you'll find a ton of info online. My son is 7 and has high functioning autism and he's the coolest little guy I know:)

"Who is to say that this "explosion" isn't due to people with lifelong struggles finally being recognized?" Not exactly. You see there are more conditions and diagnoses for these recently invented conditions happening every day. Apparently, there are a relatively few "normal" people in the world these days. Truth is people haven't changed much in the last 50 years, but what has changed is that now there are more classifications and more "Xxxx's Syndrome" or "YYYy's disease". They always existed of course, but back then the closest thing to a diagnosis was "Well, little Johnny is a bit slow" or "Timmy is a little different" and it was left at that. Shockingly people with these yet-to-be-named conditions still manged to live their lives. "is upsetting, and many people are concerned that this will mean a loss or reduction in services for people dxed with Asperger Syndrome" People who had AS 50 years ago managed to get by without special services. Why can't people to manged to do the same? "Wondering what other Aspies and people with disabilities in general think of this change" Look, AS isn't a debilitating condition, it's not death sentence, it's not an insurmountable condition that renders those afflicted with it as totally disabled drooling vegetables or anything. It's one of the mildest (relatively speaking) disabilities a person can have. There are far worse things that could happen to person. I look at it this way. Who needs these services more? Someone with AS who may be socially inept, but otherwise is capable of doing whatever a non-disabled person can do, or a person with significant mental or physical disabilities who may not be able to even go the bathroom without assistance?

Have you talked to a doctor? Have they done any testing? Don't take your teachers' word, see a professional. Asberger's Syndrome is a form of autism, but you should really talk to someone at school, like the school psychologist, who can help you sort this out. You sound like you're very concerned, so you should go talk to someone who can give you the straight answers.

Asperger's syndrome (AS) is an autism spectrum disorder. It is milder than autism but shares some of its symptoms. It is more common in boys than girls.

An obsessive interest in a single subject is a major symptom of AS. Some children with AS have become experts on dinosaurs, makes and models of cars, even objects as seemingly odd as vacuum cleaners. Their expertise, high level of vocabulary and formal speech patterns make them seem like little professors.

Children with AS have trouble reading social cues and recognizing other people's feelings. They may have strange movements or mannerisms. All of these make it difficult for them to make friends. Problems with motor skills are also common in children with AS. They may be late learning to ride a bike or catch a ball, for example. Treatment focuses on the three main symptoms: poor communication skills, obsessive or repetitive routines, and physical clumsiness.

First of all, it's spelled ASPERGER'S Syndrome. Asperger's is a kind of mild autism. It can run in families. Asperger's is less severe than autism, and is certainly less severe than schizophrenia.

No one can diagnose you with Asperger's unless they are a trained psychologist or psychotherapist. If your teachers think you have Asperger's, that doesn't mean you have it. They are NOT qualified to diagnose you. You need to go to a qualified psychologist who is trained in dealing with Asperger's Syndrome. Only that person can tell you whether or not you have Asperger's. NOBODY except a psychologist can diagnose Asperger's.

Good luck

Welcome to the club....it sounds like you've got the genes for it! My youngest brother has it (he's 11) and we think that my oldest is schizophrenic, but he's 30 now.

Kids can be cruel. One day, you'll be grown up and things will be different. I would highly suggest that you try to get really good grades in school and then try to start college while you're in highschool (most states are doing this now and it's free for highschoolers). College is NOTHING like highschool (or middle or elementary)!

Asburger's Syndrome is not a sentence it is a diagnosis that tell you a person's reaction to stress and other social situations. Though it sounds like you have a family history of mental health issues, that does not mean you will not be successful in life.

Counseling is excellent for Asburger's. Try reading up to it http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/ and then seek a counselor.
