The Canadian Federation for Sexual Health (Planned Parenthood under a new name to attract a younger crowd) "does not support raising the age of consent to sexual activity from 14 years to 16 years," calling it an "increased restriction on individual rights." (Under a proposed bill, only those less than 5 years older would be legally allowed to have sex with 14 and 15 year olds.)

rabble rouser: Yes, they are Planned Parenthood, as the first link demonstrates. No, I am not Canadian, but I have family members who are. I am not aware of any U.S. states that currently allow adults to have sex with 14 year olds to whom they are not married, but I will look into that.

Folks, it looks like I haven't been clear. In Canada right now, it is legal for adults of any age to have sex with 14 and 15 year olds. There is a proposed bill that would allow only those less than five years older to have sex with 14 and 15 year olds. Sex with peers would STILL BE LEGAL. The bill would criminalize ADULTS (those OVER 19 or 20) having sex with 14 and 15 year olds. The Canadian Federation for Sexual Health (Planned Parenthood) wants it to remain LEGAL for ADULTS to have sex with 14 and 15 year olds.

I think they should have, rather than an arbitrary age, a pyschological, physical, and financial maturity level test to see if someone is able to give consent to sex. The way I look at it, most people probably won't pass until their well into their thirties, if not older.
I feel the same way about people getting their driver's licenses. If they're not mature enough to realize that driving eighty miles an hour down a road used by children to play on, or that their lack of a muffler doesn't make them sound cool at two o'clock in the morning (or any other time during the day,) then they really shouldn't be allowed to drive.

No 14 or 15 year old, whether gay or straight, needs to be having sex...they just aren't emotionally mature enough to handle that kind of responsibility with anyone...but that doesn't mean they won't have sex...but I have to agree that if someone 5 years older had sex with them it should be illegal...and again...that would be in either a heterosexual or a homosexual relationship....

"as there is no evidence that this increased restriction on individual rights will increase protection of youth from sexual exploitation or provide any other benefit sufficient to justify the intrusion into personal privacy and consensual activity. Rather, the prospect of legal sanction and third party disclosure could seriously discourage youth from accessing preventive and therapeutic health services and other forms of information and assistance."
Why bother reading? Why not just make a statement look like it's evil when they are absolutely correct.

Given that the AVERAGE age (at least from on study I read) of first sex was 14.9 years- that seems to be right in the middle of this range.
Right or wrong, it's happening. What are you going to do, start arresting 15 year old couples for having sex? who would you arrest, the male or the female? Or just whomever is older?

Point 1 - They are not Planned Parenthood... nothing at all like them either... sorry to burst bubbles.
Point 2 - Are you canadian?
Point 3 - I agree... 15 and 16 is too young for consent... but I am a USA citizen so I agree with our current law (which sort of changes from state to state... ever been to Kentucky?)

I guess if 14 & 15yr olds would be deemed capable of consenting to sexual relationships with people up to five years older than them under this law it does seem to be kind of nonsensical to imagine that they were at the same time incapable of consenting to a relationship with someone six or seven years older than them. A person is either old enough to give consent or he/she is not.

What is your question?
Personally I don't think 14yr olds should be having sex, but some are.
Even in the US statutory rape charges for a man of any age with a girl of 14 are rare. Changing their law will not change peoples behavior.

If you read the law, poptart, right now it's very much illegal for an 18 year old to have sex with a 14 year old. The issue is whether sex between, say, a 14 year old and a 15 year old should be treated as a criminal matter, or as a social issue. If it's treated as a criminal matter, both the kids would go to jail. If it's treated as a social matter, they would get the counseling they need to avoid those kinds of mistakes.
Next time perhaps you should build up a slightlier studier straw man.

Well do you call a 14 year old and a 17 year old having sex anything unusual? I don't. It has happened throughout history, what makes this current generation any different?
