Eat after exercise! Eating before, especially right before, could cause stomach cramps and indigestion. I've also heard that doing cardio on an empty stomach prompts your body to burn more fat calories, but not everyone agrees with that. I don't know what the timing rule is, but I make sure I don't eat at least three hours before my workout.

Most trainers will tell you that you should eat a lean protein approximately 45mins to 1hour prior to your work in order to help your muscles burn body fat AND eat a complex carb to help repair your muscles following your workout. Replenishing the carbs also helps decrease DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness).

You can try whey protein before your workout and soy protein after your workout.

I generally will eat a small snack an hour and half before my workout and get something to eat immediately following my workout.

Good luck!

After. Working out on an empty stomach forces your body to burn more fat and calories. In fact if you eat after, you will burn most of what you eat off because your body is hot. It's like a furnace after you work out.

Eat 2 to 4 hours before a workout.
This may mean planning your meals at different times to accommodate your workout schedule. For example, you may eat lunch at 2:00 p.m. so you can work out at 6:00 p.m.

Eat 400 to 800 calories at your pre-exercise meal.
This amount should fuel your workout without making you feel sluggish or full.

Meal ideas – foods suitable for three to fours hours before exercise:

A small jacket potato and baked beans or cottage cheese
Six crackers and cottage cheese followed by a piece of fruit
Porridge (made with semi-skimmed milk) with a banana and a teaspoon of sugar
Rice with vegetables and lean meat
Pasta and sauce (for example: low fat tomato and bacon sauce or Bolognese)
Two slices of toast, peanut butter and a banana
Two weetabix with semi-skimmed milk and a small glass of pure fruit juice
A small jacket potato with tuna and reduced fat mayonnaise and a fruit yogurt
Snack ideas – foods suitable for one to two hours before exercise:

One slice of toast and jam
One small flapjack
One slice of fruit cake
A piece of fruit
Two digestive biscuits
A fruit yogurt
A cereal bar
A small bowl of cereal and semi-skimmed milk
A scone

Choose high-carb foods that are low in fat and have a moderate amount of protein.
A whole grain bagel topped with tomato slices and low-fat cheese, or breakfast cereal and fruit with 2% milk or soy milk, are both excellent choices.

Drink at least 10 ounces of water or sports drink 2 hours before you exercise.
This helps offset sweat loss during your workout. The 2 hours gives your kidneys time to rid your body of any excess fluid.

technically both. you should have a little bit of protein before working out, and then more lean protein afterwards.
