The more goods you could take and the more stuff you could ruin during a war the longer it would take the people to rebuild and get ahead. That stopped retaliation as the people had a hard time surviving let alone leaving their work in the fields to go back to war and revenge what had happened to them. Thus it was standard warfare to pillage and plunder those who you went to war with. Even today war costs a lot of money. If you have no money you cannot fight.

Pirates and home invaders pillage and plunder. They steal what they want, including sex (pillage), and steal what makes them richer (plunder).

It is like when I left on vacation my son plundered thru my desk drawer and I had to let him have a verbal lashing when I returned.
I let him know NOTHING in my desk belongs to anyone but me. Now I have to redo my junk drawer where I can find my things when I want them. LOL
Plundering is going thru things that are not yours and normally are none of your business.
