The Black Death in Europe in the 14th century killed a very large portion of the world, and over one-third of Europe. The total estimated deaths are 75 million people. The disease is thought to have originally came from travellers from the middle east, and was spread rapidly because of poor sanitation in the middle ages. It is also known as the Bubonic Plague, and was transmitted mainly by coming in contact with vectors such as ticks and rats. At the time, much of the population believed God was punishing the people who got sick because of sins. Today, we know the bacteria as Yersinia pestis.
