He is a friend of my husbands that will not take any money from us. We know him well as a neighbor but not on a level to know what he is into or what would be a good gift. He is into motorcycle riding and he is a very dedicated father...Thats about all that I can say and that really doesn't help finding a good gift to give.....

Some people have a hard time accepting gifts, especially if they think they are simply being a good neighbor. In this case, how about sending a gift basket? This way, it goes straight to his house and removes some of the awkwardness--and his whole family can enjoy it.

Cookie Bouquet is great, for example:
This one seems particularly appropriate:

I don't know how much work this generous neighbour has done for you, but assuming it is a lot, why don't you and your husband put together a plan whereby you combine his love for bikes with his love for his children.

You will know how much he has saved you - would it be feasible to buy his child something instead of embarrasing a geniunely helpful guy.

If his child / children are young could you get them each a push bike with appropriate safety gear - helmet, gloves, pads, etc This idea would allow the father to further the parental bond with his children as he teaches them to maintain / repair the bikes.

If his child or children are a bit older, could you possibly give them money at Christmas to enable them to buy something that they would want.

Alternatively, invite the neighbourhood over to a party in the man's honour. (You must be tactful here - you don't want to embarrass him for his good heart.)

The idea here is to thank your neighbour whilst acknowledging the level of help and the value you place in his friendship

how about a nice sum gift certificate to the Harley Davidson store for some cool gear or go pick out something he might like from there. a gift card to his fav restaurant would also be a good idea if he is doing tons of work for free you should be feeding him everyday and offering up the cold beer after work is done for the day to show your appreciation.

If he drinks and the likely hood of that is very strong being a carpenter myself. have beer there for him if you already do then next step find out if he likes whiskey or that type of drink if he does crown royal or one of the other top shelf brands will work. If that isn't his thing throw him a thank you party when the work is done make it a family event and have stuff to keep the kids occupied so he and the misses can mingle.
