If you go to Insert -> Symbol, you can pick through all of the special characters that Word offers (Symbol and Wingdings will be the best fonts to find these in). In the window that comes up with all of these characters, the "shortcut key" is referenced. Press alt + the digits that show in this window whenever you're typing to have that character inserted without having to use the insert symbol function.

And I know it's not correct, but I've been known to use a lower-case letter i for the upside down exclamation point.

In Microsoft Office Word 2003:

Go to Insert --> Symbol

Under Subset Latin-1 there are inverted question marks and exclamation points. Just select the character you want, and click 'Insert'

Not sure about the upside down exclamation mark.

alt + 0191 for question mark, and alt + 0161 for exclamation point

Keep in mind that you hold down Alt, and then press those numbers on the number keypad -- it doesn't work if you use the row of numbers above the letters on the keyboard.

You can also, in Word, click Insert -> Symbol, and select those symbols to enter in the document.
