It isn't the P2P programs that give you malware for the most part (although some do install spyware or adware). It is the files you download that contain the real malware, but there are a few best practices that you can adopt.
- Download only recognizable file extensions (Often .exe files are malicious)
- Never play a file before or while downloading
- Always download to a safe folder
- Always scan it before opening
- Immediately delete without opening anything that your security products flag as suspicious or infected
There is no sure-fire way to be 100% safe. Malware is constantly evolving and the security companies are always playing catch-up.

it is NOT the P2P that have viruses,
it is what you download that are the viruses.
so when you download you need to know what your downloading, some people love to spread viruses and mess up other peoples computers, they think it is very funny.
if you want virus free software then move over to linux operating system... everything you will ever need you get FREE
If you're downloading Music, Videos, Games, Movies, MS software then you're downloading copy right stuff this is illegal, and could cost you a bundle of money in fines so take your chance of being caught, and getting viruses
last fines I read about ranged from $75,000 to $100,000

A good f2p program is Spybot Search And Destroy. It took 2 minutes to download on my broadband connection. It tracks key loggers, not trojan horses and worms. It does pretty well for free. Another anti-virus program is Windows Defender. Download it from windowsdefender.com. Thats not really what you asked for on this question but it blocks pop ups and viruses well.

I've never gotten a virus from hundreds (literally) of torrents I've downloaded and used. If you see something, and the site allows comments. If it's a virus, there will be 10 people who have said so.

there is a risk for getting a virus on any p2p program or site, especially if it is a program you are downloading.
