My friend has a 14 month old daughter. I see her often and I have NEVER seen her smile ever. I have never heard her laugh either.

My friend's husband thinks maybe their daughter has a disorder because she hates being around other people, refuses to socialize, only wants to be held by her mother and rarely smiles or laughs.

My friend says that her daughter does smile, but it's rare since her daughter is a "serious" child.

Is this normal? I have never seen a kid act this way before.

No it's not normal. Your friend should watch her child closely for other odd things, such as not responding to her name, and not gaining language in the next few months. It could be a sign of autism.

While this could be a sign of autism, it could also be normal behavior for an extremely shy child around people she doesn't know very well. My niece was painfully shy at this age and would run from the room and never smiled when "strangers" were present. She's 12 now and a cheerleader and has come out of her shell very well, although she will always be a reserved person. My younger son was not big on groups or strangers either at this age and would avoid them at every opportunity. But he grew out of it--he's 23 now, has graduated from college, and spent a year in Japan as an international student!

The most important thing is how she behaves at home with her parents. If she interacts normally with them, then she is probably somewhat introverted, not autistic. If your friend perceives a problem, encourage her to talk to her pediatrician.

My daughter is the same way. She is 24 months now but never smiles or is happy around other people. She is very anti-social. I read it is a sign of autism and contacted our county's Regional Center which tested her and referred her to take several classes a week in sensory motor development and speech (she also doesn't say much). She will be tested in 9 months they say for autism and other learning disorders. This is really up to the parents to figure out you can hint and suggest but there is a very thin line when it comes to a parent and there child. I probably would of been offended had someone approached me about it. Some parents are in denial, I recognized the signs having worked with other children for years. You know your situation better than me but good luck in how or if you choose to raise awareness about her.

It could be a sign of autism and the longer she denies there is anything wrong with her child the less chance of helping that little girl live a normal life. There is no such thing as a serious child. I know I have two; normal children interact with there parents and smile and laugh. She should talk to her doctor.

Does the baby react to sound? This baby could be partially deaf...some children who are not interactive at this age simply are just confused as to whats going on around them.
