I have a 4-5 year old Sony KP-57HW40 57 in. Rear Projection Television. The TV suddenly developed a concave picture (i.e., the picture looks "bent" or caved inward), and there is some serious rainbow effect at the left and right edges of the screen. It happens with any input source (cable, DVD, XBOX). I checked the automatic convergence on the TV, and it is converged properly.

What might be wrong? If it needs a repair, roughly how much would it cost? I am trying to sell the TV and get some money out of it, but I am not sure if I should repair it to get a little extra money or sell it as is at a lower price.

Thanks.

The TV is not DLP. It is 5 years old, and has old-fashioned rear-projection technology.

Problem is with the covergence board. Common problem but not a diy. The modules on the board need to be replaced. <$100 is what I charge using Sony replacements, and ONLY Sony replacement modules should be used!

Sounds like a DLP TV with a defective color wheel. This may just take an adjustment or replacement wheel. ~

That guy is an idiot. You said its not a DLP! I recommend throwing it in the garbage.
