Because they need to enforce their reality on others, and use argument and invalidation to do this when they find disagreement. The truth is they don't really want to be left alone.
Interesting that this is the exact same behaviour that they complain is being done to them by folks who are religious or spiritual on R&S.
I think they will not leave this site alone because they enjoy this game of being critical and argumentative.
Also many folks on this site cannot resist playing against them.
You can't have a game without apposition players !
Sadly this is not really a game where anybody wins.

1."Down with god up with science”? That does not make any sence. One of the dumbest answers I have seen. God nor most religions in general (including Christianity) are against science.
2.“When did Y/A become a religious site”? You need to understand the question. He is not talking about Yahoo Answers in general but religious web sites. It may include the religious section of yahoo but once again why are you so concerned with those questions.
3. Now to the main question. Because they can, and as much as they hate to admit it they like talking about the subject. They also think that maybe they can make you mad or offend you to prove you are not who they think you should be. In there mind reassuring them there is no God. So try to protect your testimony. Also, they can never be 100% sure that there is not a God.
I don't like the "stupid" quote at the top though. There is a difference between stupidity and being misinformed.

HAHA...yeah well, you know Oscar Wilde was a socialist homo atheist, right?
But I've never seen "Stupidity will never die" attributed to him. I know that in "The Critic as Artist" he says "There is no sin except stupidity" - but I can see why "religious" people might not want to repeat that quote.
In answer to your question, this isn't a religious website - it's a Q&A website and this is the "Religion & Spirituality" section. And now that you know where you are - it's equally the prerogative of atheists to come on here and discuss religious issues. Atheism is a religious position.

First, this isn't a "religion web site." It's an open forum about religion and spirituality, which covers a lot of area. I can't speak for any other atheists, but I like to read other points of view, and it's fun to tweak the noses of the self-righteous.
And quoting a famous homosexual (Wilde)? Tsk, tsk, tsk. What would Jesus think?

"Stupidity will never die", nor will ignorance as long as you only read in the Christian box. If all the information you've been fed, heard and read came from only Christian sources without at least reading or listening to other viewpoints then you truly are ignorant, therefore, stupid.

Some say entertainment, some say its because "they feel a duty to straighten out people who are delusional", some say they can still have a spiritual side even if they have no belief in God.
I think its because something is pulling them here and they don't even realize it. When God is ready to put someone to work, he has some strange ways of waking us up.
Anyway, I'd like to think that may be it, because it would be pretty lame if a person decidedly went into a forum simply out of
hatred and contempt. I can't imagine that.
I am about as against being gay as you can possibly get, so ya know what?
I stay the hell out of the gay section. I have
no purpose there.

"I think that in general we should tell the truth, and even if we express it harshly it can be beneficial. But we should avoid criticizing or insulting people, with a negative intention or a negative view of things. If we do that, our words will cause others to suffer, we will not feel good in ourselves and will only render the atmosphere oppressive and stifling." His Holiness the Dalai Lama in "Daily Advice from the Heart"
In plain English chill already.

"The road to stupid is paved with good intentions." Mandy from The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
I don't want Christians to leave me alone here, though I do wish they would pay attention to the efficacy of hit and run R&S evangelizing, if only for the sake of their own dignity. The conflict is interesting here. The conflict is exhausting out there.
I want Christians to leave me alone in the rest of the world. Quit knocking on my door. Quit putting your tracts under my windshield wipers. Put down the bullhorns. Quit enacting pro-Christian anti-everyone else legislation. Quit with the entire moral superiority complex.
