Sometimes this just happens, even to the best of breeders. It's called incomplete twinning, and vets refer to them as (please don't laugh, it's seriously what they're called) fetal monsters. It's not terribly common, but it does happen. Don't feel too bad, it sounds like you are doing everything right. If this happens in subsequent litters, though, I would look into using another female for breeding.

My first thoughts are poor nutrition and or environmental factors such as flea and tick meds? Vaccines to close to the time of pregnancy? I don't know what kind of food you feed your dogs but if you bought it at the grocery store or WalMart or the local feed shop, it was not good enough.
It doesn't matter if things were the same as the last time either... poor nutrition takes a toll after time. Not instantly.
Her age had nothing to do with it. Even though it is not recommended to breed before 2 years, a healthy well taken care of b-itch can handle a pregnancy with NO problems. Ask any reproduction vet and they will tell you that.
If you did not know the timing just right she could have been due days before she actually had the pups or due well after she had them. Premies will be born dead if to soon, pups will die if they are 10 or more days late having them also.
Who knows why this happened but she needs spayed.
Also, you might love your dogs with all your heart but if you are not showing them in conformation and studying pedigrees and searching for the perfect mate conformation and health wise and breeding to your own dogs then this makes you a back yard breeder. It has nothing to do with love and care of the dogs.

regardless of the reality that the two mum and dad may well be healthful and does not have any deformities, it could take place in the event that they are the two wearing a recessive gene for this deformitive. And no retardation like started out earlier isn't undergone genes - this is on the 23pair of chromosomes, the place instead of a pair the guy has 3 chromosomes on that region. as a results of fact 2 of the puppies out of the clutter of ways many? had that disease, it would be wiser to spay and fasten the sire and the dam to circumvent destiny litters having an identical disease.

Wow sound like a freak thing to me. You don't say what breed of dog this happened too. Was the big pup a water pup? I was told with water pups they will sometimes cause problems with other pups in the developmental stage of the pups. I was speaking to a Mastiff breeder the other day and she told me of this.
22 months is not that far away from 2 years old it could be that she was not mature enough and her eggs were not either.
If Anna is new to you then it could be in her genetic background. I'm just guessing here.

Sorry about the tragedy you endured.

We are only guessing but cleft pallet is maybe from a folic acid deficency.
Now leaving a first time mother fo 41/2 hrs in hard labor alone and you are not a backyard breeder????

do you know the background of the female? There could be some genetic defects there or it could have just been spontaneous thing.

I feel so sorry for your dog that had to endure all this simply because YOU chose to breed her. Do you think she would have wanted to get pregnant and endure all this suffering?

QUESTION: Why did you breed this litter?
