My Labrador/Goldenretriever Puppy is now 4 months old we've been doing everything we read in books or heard from our vet to keep her from doing her business in the house. Everything from catching her in the act, telling her no and taking her to the "Potty Area", to confining her to a smaller area so she doesn't get a chance to look for a good spot.
what should i do, i am getting desperate cuz i heard that dogs that are over 4 months old, continue on with their bad habits and wont ever learn to not potty in the house.

HELP!!!

Crate training is, in my opinion, the best. But you have to do it right and be consistent. The puppy should be in the crate whenever she is not with you. As a puppy this young, and untrained, she should not have any run of the house, she should only be where you are. (When I was training my puppy I used a leash. I had the leash attached to him at all time when he was out of the crate and it was attached to me, so that he could not go anywhere unless I was there.) It sounds kind of mean, but really what you are teaching the puppy is that you are boss. If she is always with you or in the crate she should not have a chance to "go" in the house. Be sure that she is let outside 20-30 mins after every meal, and immediately after any play (for some reason, I can not recall, they always have to pee after playing). Everytime she "goes" outside be sure that you praise her, and make the praise consitent (I used a clicker so that the dog learned to assosciate the click with a treat and knew he was being rewarded). DO NOT ever ever ever punish a puppy for "going" in the house, unless you witnessed it and punishment is immediate. (i.e. you see your pup pee and immediately stop her and reprimand her, I would suggest a fimr"no" and redirection). If you find an old spot and then get mad at the puppy, she will not understand why she is being punished. Its very tough to be so strict with a puppy, I know. But trust me, its worth it. In less than a month of that I had my puppy 100% potty trained and to this day he will not "go" in the house. I hope I didn't confuse you.

Have you tried crate training. Using a crate for her to sleep in and then taking her out immediately in the morning. Also, you can put her in the crate when you have to leave the house for a while (up to 4 hours at a time - no more) then take her out as soon as you get home. Some vets/trainers also recommend that you put her in the crate when you are home and are too busy to keep your eye on her (ex - doing dishes, vacuuming, working on the computer) then, again, take her out when you take her out of the crate. Her crate can help potty train her as well as become a place for her to go and spend her own time - it becomes like her "bedroom" or her own space.
Dogs need enough space to lay down, stand up, and turn around in their crate - anything less is too small and anything more is too big (this could cause her to have accidents in the crate which is what you want to avoid.)
Hope this helps - ask your vet for more info about crate training, or you could buy a book or research it on the net.
- Good Luck:)

you need discipline. If she is at the door take her outside to see if she needs to go. Saying things like "Go poddy" "Find a spot" "Find a spot and go poddy" sometimes help. Take her outside often to promote this. She needs the feel of it. If she has just piddled in the house take her outside and try to make her go poddy again out there. When she does go poddy outside Congragulate her. You have to tell her that that was a good thing that she did. Saying things like "Good Girl" a will help.

Or if she's done it outside there are three ways to reward her. Praise, Play, Treat. Praise her, telling her "Good Girl" (as above) Play with her, do something that she likes. Rub her belly or something. Treat. Give her treat if shes done it.

Get a kennel carrier that is just big enough for your puppy. When you can not watch her, put her in the crate. When you allow her out, immediately take her outside to the potty area.

Feed her and water her only twice or three times a day. She will get a set rhythms for when her bowels will move and you can learn when that is so that you can predict when to take her outside.

Hello..the crate/ space training will work if the space is small enough, they need only enough space to stand, turn & stretch a little... they MUST be on a feeding & water schedule ..twice a day is fine for a pup this age, because your going to have a big dog ..if you have a full sized crate or space, it must be divided in half for the pup...there are more detailed details on the How To's on my 360 ... if you need or E Mail me anytime ..Take Care :)

dont worry, they do learn...eventualy. i have had 2 puppys and it felt like they would never learn. Maybe put newspaper on the floor for her, and each time she goes to the toilet on it, praise her, if she doesnt, put her on the paper. When she does go to the toilet on the paper, move it closer to the door and then hopefully she will get the idea.

Scold it really bad when it goes to the bathroom in the house.
Praise it and give it a cookie when it goes to the bathroom outside.
Take your puppy outside even if he doesn't look like he has to go to the bathroom, and wait till he does, and then maybe praise him again, but maybe this time a walk.
