The best thing to do is to find out what's causing them. Many times it's a physical problem, and usually based on poor diet with caffeine and sugar. If these are some of your symptoms, check your blood sugar:
fatigue, insomnia, mental confusion, nervousness, mood swings, faintness, headaches, depression, phobias, heart palpitations, a craving for sweets, anxiety, cold hands and feet, forgetfulness, dizziness, blurred vision, inner trembling, outbursts of temper, crying spells

Not joking - people use all kinds of things to "self-medicate". I used to use chocolate candy bars -- it was the most soothing thing I could think of.

I also - when upsettness & panic would begin - would walk into a fabric store for the quiet and to touch the many textures of fabrics to find the most calming feel.

Really and truly. Not all that is helpful comes in a bottle of pills.
