Of course they should!!!!!!
This is not about not learning another language!! I know personally that knowing another language is a great benefit.
But why should illegal Spanish speaking individuals force Spanish everywhere??? (Press 1 for English, Press 2 for Spanish on telephone prompts. Web sites that have a En Espanol link. Notices and signs in both English and Spanish. etc, etc)
Other immigrants came to the US "to get a better life" and they learned to speak English. Is that so hard to understand??????????????

I do agree that people coming here should learn English. If you want to live here, learn the language.
I don`t however think that learning a second language is a bad idea, not at all! It is proven that when kids learn one or more other languages from the time they are little, they learn faster!
I am German, learned English in school in Germany and when i move down to Cali this summer, I definitely want to learn Spanish.
What i think is ignorant is when you travel to Europe and expect everyone to speak YOUR language.

Of course. If you immigrate to France, you are expected to learn French. If you immigrate to Japan, you are expected to learn Japanese.
Here's a clue. If you do not speak English, you cannot become anything in this country.
You cannot become an elected official if you do not speak English. The government is conducted in English. You cannot become a police officer or a teacher or a banker.
If you live in Mexico and want to become a doctor, you must at least read English. The majority of research in science is done in English. Even the Journal of the Institute de Pasteur (in France) is published in English. Do you think you can become a doctor in the US and not speak English? Heck, the medical boards and bar exam are in English.
People who refuse to learn the dominant language of the country in which they reside are dooming their children to a life of manual or minimum wage labor.

Of course they should be required to learn English. Look around, though, and you'll find companies like Home Depot, Lowes and thousands of others who enable them not to have to. We even print voting ballots in their language (and others). That last thing amazes me most because all the political campaigns are conducted in English and since a lot of immigrants don't speak it, how the heck can they intelligently vote?

Do you know that American is the ONLY country in the Western (and most of) the Eastern world that doesn't require a second language in school? Do you know that in all countries in the world, students are REQUIRED to learn English?
So, why would you not want to learn a second language. Are you mentally difficient? Unable to learn? Have no interest?
Do you know that when an immigrant enters this country legally and starts the naturalization process to be a citizen, they must be able to speak and read English before they can take the oath of citizenship?
Do you think France expects people to be able to speak French before they enter their country? Or Germany require German?
What a ridiculous idea.

I think they should.
When my grandmother came here from Mexico, she could already speak English, she had a sponsor, a job, and all of the required paperwork to enter the country.
