I know from experience if you substitute the soda for water, you will lose weight. It will keep you hydrated and therefor you don't eat as much. Not to mention not taking in all of that sugar will help too.

Losing weight, like so many things in life, requires, among other more subtle psychological and physical 'properties',
Discipline
Attention
Desire
The first component is the one all people trying to do ANYTHING (studying for exams; trying not to cheat on a partner/spouse...ad infinitum) must master.
E.g., losing weight for the long-term requires attention to one's diet, the discipline to maintain attention, and the discipline to put one's body and mind through tough exercises that make one feel sick at first, sweaty all the time, and eventually, the discipline to stick to a routine.
Discipline is THE hard and fast rule, NO EXCEPTIONS.
Sweat. No fatty foods (includnig oils-ignore what people tell you about oils being good. Some are, but for practical puproses and short-term differences in wieght, oils, even olive and macadamia, are going to be insidious sources of weight gain).
Jog/skate/cycle for half an hour four days a week. After a few months, exercise 5 or 6 or 7 days per week.
Meditate or do yoga: this will help your issues (if you have any) with discipline.
Finally, don't be obsessive, as this will result in you resenting exercise and diet.
As for calorie counting? Studies here, studies there. Some studies say DO count calories, some don't. The science is difficult: is one calorie from a fatty food 'equivalent' to a single calorie from a can of Coke (I'm talking about a calorie for calorie comparison, even though fat has nice calories per gram, and carbs 4 calories per gram).
Buy a heart rate monitor and STAY IN ZONE 2!

Calories are units of energy. You burn calories all the time but you need to exercise to burn more. A 20 ounce pop has about 240 calories (mostly from sugar). So yeah, if you drink a lot of pop then you will probably lose weight if you quit drinking it.
Women only need 2000 calories a day and men need 2500.
Typically, if you eat 3,500 calories more than your body needs, you will put on about 1 pound of fat. The reverse can be said if you burn 3,500 calories.

There seems to be a direct affect of weight and sugar. There is an enzyme needed to process sugar, they have not yet pin-pointed it but some of us lack that enzyme thus making it impossible to break down sugars. Therefore If you cut out sugar all together there is a good chance the weight will just melt off. Personally if I eat any sugar I gain a couple pounds overnight.

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

that's a start. Soda definately has a way to pack on the weight. If you stopped drinking soda and other sugary drinks, and replace them with milk or water, you would probably see your weight decrease.

yes. If you stop drinking like a 20 oz bottle of soda a day that is a savings of 250 cals a day, easily. That is if you don't replace those cals with other food cals. Plus it is better for your body.

Intaking sugar and not burning it off will get stored in our fat cells, which requires more work to burn. Not drinking soda or fruit drinks and sub with H2O will increase your achievement of weight loss and rid your body of toxins. Good luck to you.

yea thats what i have to do...its hard but itll be worth it..plus substituting soda for water helps your skin (acne, etc) and cleaning out your body.
try to cut back on the snacks too. i used to eat alot of ice cream and now i still do but in moderation. theres this ice cream called "Skinny Cow" that you might want to try. its only 140 calories per serving which beats alot of other stuff
good luck on losing weight
