Why is it so much better than say ... Big Island?

We only have a week in hawaii, and don't want to island hop. We will probably go to Big Island ... to see the volcano ... but everyone keeps saying that Maui is the best, so its making me unsure about our decision.

Any thoughts?

Aloha, and I live here on Maui, and here on the westside, Kaanapalli resort area, the weather is perfect. The beaches are beautiful, and the water is blue and clear. When we get a few rain showers, there are rainbows everywhere. Maui is prety laid back, and there are a ton of things to do here. Dining on the ocean, doing a sunset cruise, going to our volcano, Haleakala, or driving to Hana, or just the laid back atmosphere on the beach, which is by far, better than Waikiki. I like the big island too, but Kona is so hot, and their beaches are not like ours, in my opinion, so I hope that helps you. You can always e-mail me if you want some more info. Aloha.

Why not go to Maui and take a day trip to visit the volcano. You can fly each way for $19 to $39 plus taxes and fees. Rent a car and drive to the volcano, it's not that far. Or spend the last day or 2 there and stay at the Volcano House right inside the National Park. You can take the helicopter tour of the volcano from the Hilo airport if you choose to just fly there for the day. Don't miss both if you don't have to. How often do you get that kind of chance.

Because there are so many time-share condos?
Because they sell "I got mauied in Maui" souvernirs?

I'm beginning to formulate a theory here, brought on by your question. I've been reading these answers by other people who say that Maui is by far the best island and I am truly baffled. I've found Maui to be arid, commercial and not that spectacular in terms of scenery. Okay, so here's the theory.

There are gazillions of relatively inexpensive condo-style hotels and timeshares on Maui. That enables people to go to Maui instead of other islands that are less developed and offer less number of such low-end, bee-hive style lodgings.

The problem is that these masses of people who go to Maui on discounted condo hotel rates would otherwise have less money to spend on other things like activities and entertainment, food. And since people generally like to brag about where they have visited, they of course would recommend that you go to beautiful Maui.

The Big Island has plenty of serene and beautiful B&Bs and cottage rentals at reasonable prices, from $75 per night and up.

I haven't gone to the Big Island yet, but you could ask yourself, what is "romantic" to you? Swimming in a secluded watering hole with your sweetie? Enjoying the sound of rain showers while you two hug each other under a huge leaf? Finding some peace and quiet tandem kayaking along a gently flowing river? Hmmm... Maui doesn't seem to inspire these kinds of moments...

Big Island offers the same luaus and the same activities that are offered at other islands. It is a little harder to get to, but I am willing to bet that you will get a lot more privacy and a little more of that old Hawaii feeling than highly commercialized Maui.

Maui is definitely the best. It's beautiful, green and lush, and it has the best beaches! Relaxing and laid back. Do the road to Hana drive....it's gorgeous!

The Big Island is nice too- though very different in my opinion due to the volcanic rock around. The Big Island is great if you're active and want to go hiking and do more outdoorsy stuff.

Good luck with your decision!

"Maui no ka oi"...Maui is the best. There is a lot of truth to that, it has the best combination of things to do with beauty. The big island is great and you will be very happy, but Maui is still the best.

If I was only going to one island, it would be Maui.

i say make your OWN resturant, your husband will be suppized and delighted! Go out on the beach will candles and rose petals. Get everthing set up and then have him show up to a night of romance! This is a sexy yet cheap way to show him to love him and care so much that no swanky resturant could compare to the love you put into the meal! Even if it ends up being hotdogs or something
