I am moving to Washington D.C. with my boyfreind. My husband died in Oct. ...a suicide. I am renting the house. My daughter wants me to stay in the house with her. How can I tell her to live at college for her senior year? She is so against it! Help!

I would guess that your daughter is afraid of losing you , too. She just lost her father - a hard blow for a child. And now she is losing you to another city and another man. Talk to her - let her know how much she means to you and that you will always be there for her. She's probably scared to be out on her own and the house represents roots to her... stability. Be patient and try to get to the hurt that she is obviously feeling. Your love will give her the strength to try to be out on her own.

Her father has not been dead a year yet. She has probably not had sufficient time to mourn and wants to be near her only parent. Although you have moved on, she has not. Not only did her father die but he took his own life...her mother has a new boyfriend and wants to move away from her....She is probably thinking that she must not be worth much if both her parents would abandon her, because that IS what you are doing.
Please reconsider moving, give her time to heal and seek a counseling group that you could both attend that deals specifically with suicide.

I know you said she is 20, but senior year of what high school? If so I think you should stay with her, she just lost her father she does not need to loose her mother shortly afterwards. Its one more year and cant the boyfriend wait instead of the daughter??
I agree you need to give us a little more info.

let me show a way.
suppose you were her
what could make you live in yr twenith years of old in an unwanted place?
you see any where will be like a prison even school
if you force someone to stay at somwhere unwantedly, that place will change to prison to her or his, even it be their own home.
so dont try uselessly. something unwanted does exist that causes her to refrain.
try to find and solve it.
the best person who is close enough to yr girl is no one except you.
you are the most reliable person whom she can trust and consult and rely upon in this sorrowfullness of feeling loanly and losing father.
wish you both success

Well you can't make her live on campus if she doesnt want to. Just give her options... you give her the options ans she chooses. Do you think maybe because she cant afford to live on her own?
Im not saying to use these but an example would be
"Go live with me, get an apartment, or live on campus"
Bam! easy as that, she will make her own decision that way.

Is she balking because of the expense? Most college seniors don't live on campus unless they have to. Help her find an apartment and help pay for it. She'll come around soon enough.

In my religion children stay with the parents until they get married. So don't kick her out of the house. You should let her stay with you until she is married otherwise she'll treat you badly when your old.

just tell her to move out. she is old enough to take care of herself. she is not a little girl anymore. she can't always have mommy around. i know you love your daughter but she either moves to the dorms or finds a little apartment for her.

There isn't sufficient information to help you here.

I suggest that both of you go to grief counseling as a starting point.
