Officially the church hasn't embraced the term "Mormom". The guidelines for media on the Church website ask that journalists use the full name of the church and avoid the word "Mormon", but we will always have the "Mormon Tabernacle Choir". "Mormon" is easier to say and recognise, and is no longer derogatory.

The fact is that we don't worship Mormon, much as we respect him. We worship Jesus Christ, and we like that to be acknowledged in the name of the church. I like to say that I am a Christian who is also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but if pushed I will admit to being a Mormon Christian.

I think I understand what you're saying, but no, it doesn't bother me. Even though I like the full name, and have no problem with it whatsoever, and understand that the "Mormon Church" would be the correct name IF we worshipped Mormon (which we don't), I like that there is some shorter name for the church. Everyone seems to confuse LDS with lsd, and the Church of Jesus Christ, seems a little too much like the Church of Christ's name, so Mormon it is. Strange though, I prefer Mormon to Mormon Church.

Originally the term "mormon" or "mormonite" was used by non mormons as derogatory, but it gradually lost it's original meaning. A similar thing happen with the word "Yankee" used by the British to taunt American revolutionary soldiers. "Yankee Doodle" wasn't a nice thing in 1776, but now it's patriotic.
My 1937 Webster's dictionary defines "Guy" as a 'queer-looking fellow', probably the equivalent of "Nerd". Languages and titles change all the time. Also, the pronouns "Thee", "Thou" and "Thy" were considered vulgar terms in old english used by the common peasantry. Now it's considered reverent.
"Mormon" rolls off the tongue smoother and faster than
'memberofthechurchofjesus christoflatterdaysaints'
so that may not change for a long time.

It does bother me because Mormon was a man that lived over 1600 years ago, but this church isn't based on his teachings. It is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, that is why it is call The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
When someone asks me if I'm Mormon I always say "No, he lived over 1600 years ago." If you mean "Are you a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?" then the answer is yes.

Not really. I was born and raised Methodist, and they did the very same thing. Enemies of John Wesley called him and his followes "methodists" as a term of derision, but they took it and ran with it.

What bothers me is that anti-Mormons use this to put us down, when it's done by others who they would classify as Christian. So, if you were, say, a pentecostal saying something like "If Mormons are Christians, can I be a Mormon?" or something equally as stupid, I would answer with "If Pentecostals are Christians, are all Christians pentecostal?" or, "If Methodists are Christian, are all Christians Methodist?" Same difference, IMHO.

Is Mormon offensive? Why?

I'm not a big fan of the religion, but I have to admit that some of the nicest people I've ever met have been... um... LDSers?

I may be confused by the question. My church ( and whole denomonation) does not accept Mormons to be Christians because they do not agree with the basic articles of faith.

Since the LDS is no longer a cult, I guess the Church can embrace them...........for a fee.

That would only be the Mormon church. It bothers me that Mormons are now calling their selves Christians when they are not.
