My husband (atheist) and myself (pagan) just went to the DMV, bought the marriage license, signed it (you can solemnize your own marriage in our state - even so, I'm an ordained reverend), sent it in, and we were done with it. Had he been my religion we would have had an outdoor wedding performed by a priestess of my tradition (without any fancy dresses or huge meals or any nonsense like that). I personally don't understand weddings. The money people spend to get married would be better spent for a down payment on a house, paying off the bills, or putting money away for retirement or into savings. Just my opinion. :) What can I say? I'm a practical, thrifty gal.

Not a church, but in a wedding chapel type of place. In my area we have many old Victorian homes and some fancy resorts that are used for weddings. They are VERY beautiful and I personally like them better than a traditional church. I am not a religious person so I see no reason to have a church wedding. I have also heard to people having a destination wedding and then having a reception when they get back, I think that might be a good idea too.

I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses. My husband and I were married two years ago. We both wanted a simple wedding without a lot of fuss. We didn't want to stress everyone out, including ourselves. We were married in my congregation's Kingdom Hall by a friend of ours who is an elder in my old congregation. Then we had an outdoor reception at the State Park. (My favorite place in the world. It's so beautiful there. And, anyway, that's where Mark proposed, so it was perfect.) We didn't invite many people. Just our congregation (which is small) and a few members of his family (which is large). A friend did the music and everyone brought a dish. The bridesmaids, the groomsmen, and Mark and I decorated the night before. We had a blast and it wasn't showy or stressful a bit. I'd do it all over again just like that.

I doubt most Atheists marry in a church but I know of a few such marriages in my father's church. Atheists often join our congregations for the social and community outreach factors and then chose to be married there among friends.

I was wed in my father's church as well. I am a Unitarian. My sister had her wedding on the beach. Lovely ceremony.

And getting married in a church is only the religious traditional way to wed in the US.

When I was younger I would have done the church thing (my family is Catholic), but now I honestly want to fly to Vegas and get married by an Elvis impersonator, then have a reception back home.

I'm Southern Baptist and I had a church wedding. Very traditional with the vows, music, and dress.

I would spring for the top of a mountain without much formality! Maybe have a Unitarian or something do the ceremony.

But it would depend on what she wanted too. That kind of thing is usually more important for the girl.

As an Atheist, I would never get married in a church. Marriages can occur between a man and a woman, or a man and a man, or a woman and a woman, or a woman and a chihuahua. People can get married to whomever, however, whereever and whatever they want.

At the JP at the courthouse because there were not any Pagan temples around.

No wedding for me. i did that once and once was enough. I think it's wonderful for people who believe it's something they want to do.

If I do ever decide to try and do something even similar I will make vows to the person. The rest is a waste of money. lol
