Let me tell you a true story about a cop....There is a man who works 12-14 hours a day, with no sleep and little time for breaks and food. He works this hard so his wife can go to the teaching credential program and have her dream of becoming a teacher come true. There is a man who puts on his uniform and badge every day to make a living. He faces the ugliest and worst of people at the wee hours of night. He protects women from their abusive husbands and finds the suspects that just robbed a store owner of everything he has. He stops a group of runaways and talks to them about the importance of family and school and gives them hope and guidance. He interviews a nine year old girl for hours that just revealed she has been raped every night for the last year by her dad. He stops cars that are driven by drug dealers, gang members and theives. He runs after gang members that leave others for dead and when he finally catches up with them they attack him and no they don't win. This happens every day and every day he comes home with a smile on his face, takes out the trash and crawls into bed with his wife. Instead of venting about his day, he asks about hers. He wants to know about her teaching, her class, her students. He wants to give her that dream and he does so every day because he is a police officer. It is a job and a way of life. He makes a difference and if you ask him if he does he'll say "no, I'm just paying the bills". I know this because I am married to him. So when you say you've never met a cop you like, you haven't met my husband.

I, for one, appreciate Mark J's response.
It is my opinion that you are disgruntled over an event between you, or a friend, and the police.
The first thing you need to realize is there are not enough officers on the streets! This is due to state governments who are held to the voters desire to pay minimal amounts of taxes in an already overtaxed system to pay for more officers. This is why you never have an officer there when you need one.
Next there is the issue of your comment..."they're there when you DON'T" need them. Your comment sounds like ... again ... you may have been caught doing something wrong. Whose fault is that....certainly not the officers. They are doing what the law requires them to do....enforce the laws of which the voters demand!
I have been an officer for over 30 years and treated everybody equally! This means I obey the laws I enforce as well! Are all officers the same...maybe...maybe not! But no matter what walk of life one is in...no matter what profession...there are those who do right all the time...those who do right MOST of the time...and those who break the laws everytime they get a chance.
The latter are the ones officers deal with most often. Officers become similar to that of Pavlovs Law where we become attuned to "conditioned reflexes."
When you deal with bad people MOST of the time...you tend to be conditioned to treat ALL people equally, even those who don't normally get into trouble.
Officers are humans also and subject to error just like you!
Maybe you should consider BOTH sides to a story and think maybe you are partially responsible for your ill feelings! Certainly making a comment about how "ALL cops should fall off the face of the earth" is not a good way to approach people..let alone officers!
Best wishes.

They ARE special. Not everyone would put up with the mutants they deal with on a daily basis, see the sights they are forced to see, and make the sacrifices they and their families are forced to make.
You want them to drop off the end of the earth? Hope you never need anyone to rescue you or a loved one. Just remember, while everyone else was running out of the towers on 9-11, the police and firefighters were running IN to the buildings!

My only complaint is that for most people, the only visible enforcement is traffic. While I understand that traffic enforcement is important, I thought the police were out there to reduce crime. You don't often see the police in areas where crime seems to be persistent. If a homeowner has need of the police, it can often take hours for a response. For crimes against individuals, the police will take a few notes but after that - forget it. It's not their job to hunt down criminals. It's a wonder that people don't take a more vigilante approach to their problems with all the help we get from the police.

Not all police officers are as bad as you think they are, and how dare you give off the "power-hungry" stereotype when you say, "they think there special when they put on a gun and uniform. Ive never met a cop i liked." You must have got caught breaking the law, and have a record as long as my arm. Who the F do you think you are?
I just reported this question. Thanks for the two points anyway. Sorry you had to waste five.

Yeah? Well you know how many lives cops have saved? You many risks they've taken? What they think every morning when they wake up realizing they can kill themselves trying to save others? How many lives they have changed? How many families they have helped? How many people wouldn't be here right now if it wasen't for them?
I didn't think so.
Why don't you drop off the end of the Earth and make everyone's day a little better.

there is almost no such thing as patrol any more. when a squad signs on at the beginning of a shift they already have a list of calls.they never get caught up.there are so many calls now that they have to take them in a line of importance.there is just plain not enough police to do the job any more

I've never met a person who's name had a number in it I liked.
wait, .... mine has a number. Opps how hypocritical of me!
Do cops cause accidents? Sure, it happens.
do law obeying people have accidents? Sure.
Does it mean you have to get on your soap box and be a jerk? Guess so, huh?

You are obviously very young and your attitude shows why you have had bad experiences with cops. I've had good experiences with cops in several occasions. The best was when I got a possession of marijuana ticket. He was totally cool and actually gave me tips on where to smoke if I felt I needed to. I got tickets on all occasions, but that's not their fault, they are just doing their jobs. It was my fault for breaking the law. I had good experiences with them because I showed them respect right from the beginning. I also have two neighbors who are cops and are way cool. Learn how to show respect to people and stop with your rebellios attitude and it just might get you further in life.
