We take them out to play and explore a couple of times a day. I feel like they want and maybe need to be out more than that but we work 8-5 jobs. It scares me to just turn the box over so they can get in and out of it! What if they get under the couch, recliner, behind the entertainment center, ect? I'm also afraid we'll accidentally step on one of them or even worse that my Doberman, Ziek, who wants to play with them so bad he can’t stand it, will break down the door (lol) to get to them and accidentally kill them! He loves our cat and the kittens! Well you get the picture. What should I do?

Thanks so much!

Get a LARGER box for the cat family. Or you could put mom and the babies in your bathroom for the day. Be sure you have a clean litter box and food and water for the mom. Everybody will be fine in there for the day!

Three week old kittens are beginning to explore their world and need to be protected from a rowdy dog!

I rescued an abandoned, pregnant, very young cat. She had 4 babies the night of May 1st. I realized right away I did not want kittens crawling all around my bedroom. Not only do I get up in the middle of the night, often, but I'm primarily a dog person and have 2 large dogs that like to sleep in my room and have never been around cats. I knew I had to help protect the babies. Soooo.... I bought a Pack N Play. (Baby play pen) It works GREAT!!! Babies are safely tucked away in their own little pet bed, inside their own private play area. Mom can easily jump in and out (the pack N play is nestled next to the foot of my bed so she doesn't have to jump very hard). No worry about babies crawling around my floor, no worries about dogs. Not sure what I'm going to do with the Pack N Play after the babies are gone 'cause I plan on having mom spayed.
BTW, I purchased the Pack N Play at a flea market for $15.00.

if there are only 3 weeks old then they are too young to get out of the box. as a matter of fact there eyes should have just opened. at about 2 months let them explore under there mothers supervision. they will explore, that is normal.
as for the dog they should be safe if you keep an eye on things. when you are away just make sure the cats have an escape route if needed, in cased the dog gets too rough.
they should be fine.

ABSOLUTELY NOT LET THEM ROAM WHEN HOME ALONE!!!! kittens, especially that young, should never be left loose and unattended for that length of time. they can easily get their tiny claws snagged in something and literally be left hanging until someone comes home. as long as the mother can get to them, they're fine. try to let them out as often as possible when you're home, so that they can become aware of normal life out of the box.
