Yes, you can do your 2006 taxes without your 2005 taxes being done. You can e-file your 2006 taxes, but will have to paper file your 2005 tax return whenever/ifever you get it completed. The only thing you would possibly need your 2005 taxes for in relation to your 2006 taxes is for determining if there is an underpayment penalty for 2006 if you owe. The IRS says you can avoid a penalty if you have paid either 100% of your current years taxes (110% if your income is high enough) or 90% of the prior year tax, and you paid what you owed by 4/17/07.

You should submit your 2006 taxes right away. Then diligently work to get 2005 done, unless you didn't need to file for 2005. The IRS treats each year seperately. I skipped 2001 and did not file it until around 2004, but I filed 2002-3 on time with no problem.
