I am 5'10" and ride a 19" Giant. Basically, you want between 2 - 4" clearance from your bits and the top tube.

Go to this site and use the guestimator:

I can't give you a number because different brands fit differently, but the following will work. Make sure you have a couple of inches of stand over clearance when standing over the top tube. The next important number is the top tube length. Shoot for a 90 to 100 mm stem and test ride bike making a note of the toptube length. Find the one where the bike has a natural feel to it and you feel confident when you ride it, turn it, go down steep hills, etc. This test ride will factor in many other items such as head tube angle, and various frame geometry's. Try to equilize all the bikes by having the same tire pressure for your test ride. The bike sit there and people play with them so make sure it is checked out before your test ride. Take notes!! This is the only way to get the best size/bike for you. There is no majic formula to get a size "number". Don't buy the number, buy the bike. Cheers - and have fun shopping. It must be fun!

There are different sizes to consider. If you have long legs you should get the distance to pedal measurement. There should be a certain angle bend when you rest your feet on the pedal. When you are standing over the frame of the upright bike, your frame should be several inches below your crotch area. You should also consider wheel size, the type of bike (mountain, road), and the handle bars. With handle bars they should be a certain width so that you don't tire your shoulders. There's really lots to consider, and it's best to go to a bike shop and have them measure you on a bike.

You can pick a generic sized bike for your given height, but then this won't take into account all the variables I have described above, so you will end up with a bike that your body will have to conform to rather than the bike conforming to your body. Good luck!

Everyone who said "Go to the bike shop!" is right on. If you don't get fitted you could make the horrible mistake of buying the wrong size frame and it's all downhill from there (and not in a fun way!).

Good luck!

Every person is different. Go to a bike store, and get sized for a bike, then buy one online :)

There are a couple of websites that have fit calculators that you can use to get a good reference. One is competitive cyclist and the other is wrench science. You can also go to a bicycle shop and test ride a few bicycles especially one like you are looking for.
