Someone on this board was asking which present s/he could give to a friend whose dog had died.

Just out of curiosity, is this a standard practice in some places of the world?
If so, where?

And is there such a thing as sympathy cards for dogs (or cats or any other pets)?
While at this, how long has this become a standard practice?

I'm asking this because I've never heard of this before.

Who knows if this won't be a motive to say "you learn something new everyday".

(Long live the Internet)

I have never heard of it being common practice anywhere. I know people can get emotionally attached to their pets, even as much as a family member. If you think this is strange, you're not alone.

I have seen sympathy cards for people who's dogs or cats or other animals have died but not many.

More so I've seen cards for dogs and other animals that are sick that are made out of a cookie like cake that have a little get better message on top in a chicken or fish frosting however that's for when the animal is still alive clearly.

Yes, there are sympathy cards for the loss of a pet. I think either American Greetings or Hallmark produces the cards. I don't knw if it is standard practice, but if I know a friend really loved a pet, and it died, I would give them a card (and probably take them to a movie or dinner to get them out and cheer them up).

Yes, there most certainly are sympathy cards for dogs - they are usually found in the bereavement section in card stores, and many times they are for "pets", not a specific animal. I have seen them in the US and the UK - very few to choose from, 2-3 in a store, but they do exist!!

And as someone who has lost a pet and received such a card, it does make you feel a little better to have your loss acknowledged.

There are cards out there for sympathy on the loss of a pet. I don't know how long they've been available, but I've seen them for the past several years (and woudl buy blank ones to send to friends who lost their pets when I couldn't find them in stock).

HI,
Actually what I do is I have a Hallmark card program and I make my own cards. I like to personalize each card with the dogs name and the persons name on it. I think it makes for a very special touch. You can go to any of the big card sitesd and for a very modest fee you can join and then prink your own card out.
Hallmark has one so does American Greetings.
Try one of these. What a good person you are to even think of this.

Both of our "forever dogs" were put down due to complications of old age (at life expectancy). Both times our vet sent us a condolence card... it may have ended up in the recycle bin, but they were both appreciated... it showed they cared about the pets, not just the cash.

I hadn't heard of such a thing before this however.
