I like to make my road trips about more than just getting from here to there. I haven't done this drive in ages so any tips would be appreciated!

If you're in the Barstow area around lunch time stop in for a trip down memory lane at:

Peggy Sues "Nifty 50's Diner"
Ghost Town Road exit
Yermo, California

Enjoy an authentic 1950's style road side diner just like you saw on "Route 66". Have a malt from the soda fountain, get some home made candies, listen to 50's music on the juke box.

Stop at the "Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas" located just across the border in Primm, Nevada. Browse through over 100 stores for discounted name brand products and clothing. If the rest of the family isn't interested, there is a shuttle bus that runs between Primm and Las Vegas. On the "morbid" side, the actual Ford car used by Bonnie & Clyde when they were killed by police officers is on display at the mall.

"B B" is incorrect. There are no legal brothels in Clark County.

Ok, this is one of the most boringist drives with almost no scenery, but my husband and I try to have fun, as we do it often. If your heading up the 15, in Victorville there is a small amusment park with one big ride that is sort of like the hammer. I haven't done it yet, but it looks fun. (*you can't miss seeing it right off the freeway on the right). When you first get into Barstow, there is an outlet mall thats OK. Look to the right and you'll see an Old Navy just before you need to turn off. Just past Barstow (no matter which way you go you have to be on the 15 by now) there is the Calico Mining town. I haven't done it since I was young, but it is interesting, especially the train tour. Other than that you can get some sasperella and play a few shooting games (carnival style). After that, its only about an hour to Baker, CA. Not much to see there but we have stopped at the Alien Jerkey store and taken a break by eating free samples and looking at all of their intresting decor. Then another hour to Primm/Stateline - Hello, first casino! - and when you lose your money there(you will!), the outlet mall is pretty good and there is a small display of the Bonnie and Clyde death car with lots of info and artifacts, and then there is the small amusement park at Buffalo Bills. The Desperado roller coaster is one of the best rides around. After that, only less than an hour till your there. We usually take some comedy CD's to listen to on the ride here to there. There is very little choice for radio stations to listen to and even loud music can get boring, so we bring some George Lopez, Carlos Mencia, Bill Crosby, etc. and that keeps us awake and intrested. Have fun, and feel lucky that we are so close!

Ooooh, LA to Vegas is so fun, we always drive at night! Why? Because our youngest always wants to play "I Spy". Once you've exhausted "rocks" and "weeds", there's not much else.

OK, there are a couple things:

Barstow Outlet Malls (Lenwood)
Calico Ghost Town
Bun Boy (Baker), the world's biggest thermometer- Easy to see why your tires are melting.
Primm, NV: Roller Coasters, first shot at losing your money.

Seriously, this is just not one of your "Joy in the Journey" places. When we go, we leave at night after the worst of the traffic is done. We drive for two hours to Barstow, and grab a bite to eat (to go). Usually at In-N-Out, Tommy's or something similarly greasy. My 6YO insists on the orange chicken at Panda Express, so we usually stop next door at In-N-Out. From there, it's a straight shot to Vegas (or Laughlin), about 2 hours down the road.

shakesbear---Do you remember what you saw the last time you did this drive....well it's still there....the hamlet of Barstow is where most people grab an omelet or something to eat from the local mechants, should make for a not too interesting midsummers night drive....
