Joseph Lister came to Edinburgh in 1853 after graduating in medicine in London. In 1866 Lister introduced carbolic acid as an antiseptic, to kill airborne bacteria and to prevent their transmission into wounds from the air of the operating theatre. He was appointed Professor of Surgery in 1869 and continued to develop improved methods of antisepsis that revolutionised surgical practice.

Basically, Lister made surgery safer through the use of carbolic acid to kill germs on medical instruments, skin and hands. Surgical infections dropped greatly. Carbolic acid is an antiseptic.

Although not a physician or surgeon, Pasteur in France popularized asepsis, the thorough cleansing of hands and instruments used in surgery and deliveries. Semmelweiss did the same in Budapest and Vienna but received little credit during his lifetime.
