He developed the first effective vaccine against polio.

Persons born after 1950 are not aware of the terror that visited children every summer. Twenty thousand developed paralytic polio, losing control of arms or legs or even entire body, being confined to a metal chamber called an iron lung. Polio was a leading cause of childhood mortality. All this changed in the mid-1950's when Salk's vaccine became available to the public. Summer became fun again.
