Get garlic capsules/tablets from the chemist, the low odour ones. Tell him to swallow one whole with a drink of water midway through his dinner, so there is food taken in before and after the tablet. It works. This is the healthiest and easiest way, the garlic will also help guard off infections/colds etc and ward off heart attacks/strokes. Forget about the wholemeal, if he's elderly let him eat what he likes.....

To be honest I have this problem with my daughter . She is 11 and suffered terrible with constipation since she was a baby . When she was 7 she had to have an operation as she had not had a bowel movement for over 7 weeks . She was in absolute agony .
I have tried everything wholemeal products ,fruits ,plenty of water , dates ,prunes .fibre gel have you tried any of those ? I now give her senakot regularly and if she gets really bad she has to take picolax it's basically what they use to empty a bowel before a operation . Very strong but works the only thing that does tried everything that a doctor as prescribed and still no cure .

With age the medication we have to take causes this problem.
A 4 to 6 ounce of Prune juice each morning will solve the problem. If he will not drink the prune juice or eat prunes.
Make something chocolate like brownies and put prune puree into them . It works really well.

Get him to have a chat to his GP about it then he can discuss if there are any other symptoms etc, to determine if it is just basic constipation.
I would say encourage him to drink plenty of water and mayb a fig a day; lots of fruit.
Also a tip I have heard is to have a strong cup of coffee, as this can stimulate the bowel.
The GP can prescribe regular senna, lactulose or fybogel which a lot of eldery people are on.
Hope this helps :)

Go to your chemist they are a few things you can get over the counter for this problem , start off with a small dose until you find the right amount that will work for him . Diet is very important in this situation.

Hide it in his food. That is what I do to my children and husband. They never know the difference. If that is not possible then talk to his doctor and see if they can suggest something either dietary or pill form. I use to work at a nursing home and the consequences were not pretty. Having their bowels impacted was horrible.

Miralax! It used to be prescription medication but now it's OTC. You can mix it in any liquid and it's tasteless. It's THE best laxative available. I use it for constipation from my pain meds and it works VERY well.

Plenty of water, exercise and fruit are great to get the bowels moving. Dried fruit is also good. You could try a stool softener to help so he doesn't have to bear down so hard.

Epsom salts is fantastic and also a very inexpensive treatment.Avoid eggs and bananas as they bind you up.
Prune juice or syrup of figs are other options but don't taste very nice.Hope this helps.

Ask at your local chemist for Lactulose. There are also tablets such as Dulcolax which are just as safe and work really well.
