8 AWG will work, but I'd use 6 AWG so it would definitely stay cool if it was loaded hard.

That depends upon the type of wire you will be using (THHN, MTW etc) the number of conductors in the wire and the temperature. There is no one set answer for this one. However to be totally safe it apprars that AWG 6 will do it in all cases except Al (THHW, RTW, THWN,XHHW at 170degrees C) then AWG 4.

50 amp is 6 Awg copper or 4 Awg AL.
Additional NEC table 310.13
#6 CU AWG with TW or UF @ 60C =55 A
#4 AL AWG with the same =55AMP
Based on insulation type you could go smaller, but I would stick to a #6 CU or #4 AL.

Also be sure to check the temperature ratings of your terminations (lugs). The wire should match that.
