Most people don't want to read stories where the bad guys win, primarily. It won't sell. Also, authors spend a lot of time working on their stories and want to pass on some theme or moral lesson, and that's easier to do if you have one character represent the good and another represent the bad. If you're interested in the bad guy winning, I say to move out of the genre fiction arena and get into places where good and bad are a little more ambiguous, as are winning and losing. Look at Cormac McCarthy's The Road, or even Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, for instance. Mostly, I wanted to write this to clear up a common misconception/misinterpretation some people have. The person above me wrote that in Taxi Driver, Bickle is rewarded. The end is actually a coma-fantasy he had before his death. EDIT: @tt("t) IZK Of the other movies you listed, I've only seen Pulp Fiction and The Italian Job, and I don't remember The Italian Job too well. As far as Pulp Fiction goes, though, I see where your coming from, but remember that Vincent gets killed and Jules finds God (is redeemed), Marsellus gets... well, we all know... it's implied that the two robbers are redeemed in some way, and Marsellus' wife ODs. None of these are what you might call 'getting away with it.' It just depends on what you consider 'success' versus 'failure.' With what I remember about The Italian Job, it's the question of who is the hero. You mentioned this in your answer, and it's just moral ambiguity, not much punishment vs reward. All that said, I didn't mean any disrespect. This is the internet and things tend to come out that way from time to time, but I don't know you, why would I want to get in your grill?

My two favorites are THE LONGEST DAY and WE WERE SOLDIERS.

THE LONGEST DAY was historically accurate, for the most part. It drew about all of the leading actors of the day from the US, UK, France and Germany. The actors spoke in their native languages and most fun of all, many of the anecdotes collected from the troops were depicted on the screen.

I liked WE WERE SOLDIERS for many of the same reason; the characters were strong and the story accurate. One thing I loved is the fact that this is the only movie I have ever seen that captures "the moment." That is the point when a serviceman turns away from home and is on the way to war. It's not when they are on the bus. It happened when Mel took a deep breathe and put on his helmet. When the other officer turned his eyes away from his wife in bed. That moment of separation is painful but necessary for a man to do his job.

Here's my pic:

1. Gettysburg
2. We Were Soldiers
3. Enemy at the Gates
4. Saving Private Ryan
5. The Great Escape
6. Das Boot
7. Battleground
8. Go For Broke

I would've picked Battle of the Bulge, but the US Tanks painted with German insignias to look like Tigers turned me off.
