I have a kodak easy share camera that i'm not happy with. I'm an avid picture taker - subject is usually my daughter or step-kids. I want a picture that is great overall - doesn't get dark in a gym (why is that??), can take good pics of motion (mine sucks even on the sports setting). Also I don't want to spend $1000 either.

The best camera for under $200 is the Canon A550

* 7.1 Megapixel
*4X Optical Zoom
* Very good photo quality, noise levels low through ISO 400 (in good light)
* Well built for the price
* Very good performance
* LCD visible in low light
* Some manual controls
* AF-assist lamp, good low light focusing
* Good movie and continuous shooting modes
* Impressive software bundle
* Uses AA batteries; great battery life
* USB 2.0 High Speed support

I would like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;
2. It's very small and light;
3. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free;
4. And the price is a mere $120 [sold at Samy's Camera, Staples.com.]

You should probably go with a Digital SLR (DSLR) camera which will fit your needs perfectly. A regular point and shoot camera is not useful for action photography whereas, a DSLR will handle low light and action photography with ease.

Some highly recommended cameras are:

Canon Digital Rebel XTi
Nikon D40
Olympus E500

You can't go wrong with any of these cameras.

You probably won't be satisfied with anything less than a dSLR.

Get yourself a Nikon D40x 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-135mm for well under $1000.

This will be very satisfying.
