I had an Accent for a few years then traded up for an Elantra. We also owned a Kia Spectra (same company, basically a re-branded Elantra) a few years back. I can honestly say that Hyundais are the best value out there right now. Their warranty is outstanding, but you'll barely use it because their cars are extremely reliable. They are priced incredibly well and are loaded with features. We got our '06 Elantra for just under 14k and it is loaded with power everything, AC, MP3, cruise control...you name it. A similarly equipped American car would cost at least 18 or 19k and not be anywhere near as reliable. They also get great mileage...my Accent got around 36 mpg, the Elantra gets around 32-36 (a little less b/c of auto transmission) and the Spectra also averaged around 36 mpg. We take trips out of state to see family...the drive is around 410 miles, and we always make it on one tank of gas with just under 1/4 tank to spare. I go straight highway with the cruise on and I get 37 - 39 mpg. Its insane!
We love our Hyundais and will always buy them in the future. They are now in the top 3 in reliability (tied with Honda!) and are fun to drive. Having owned a few Hyundais, I would definitely say they have improved and are well worth purchasing. The only downside in the past was resale value, most of America hasn't caught on to how good Hyundai is yet but I think that is changing. My Elantra has a Blue Book value of around 12,500. Not bad that it only depreciated 1500 in a year!

I am a big fan of Japanese cars but I have to admit Hyundai has improved drastically over the years. The Elantra is really nice. It has been since around the 2000 model year, but people tend to dismiss them. I have yet to find a Hyundai owner that didn't like their car as of late. You better by soon because Hyundai is moving upscale and their company Kia will take their place once the do so. Have you seen the pics at the luxury car that Hyundai is going to bring to the market around 2009 to compete with BMW and Mercedes. I was told that BMW and Mercedes have taken notice. That says a lot.

Hyundai has greatly improved their quality over the past several years. A company (can't remember who...somebody like JD Power) recently ranked the most reliable brands. The list was dominated by Japanese. However, Hyundai beat out the Big 3 in the list.

The brand has made Minor Changes. They are still the same cheap Manufacturer but with a slightly better design. However if you would like to avoid Headaches and a surplus of Problems then get ANY BRAND BUT HYUNDAI OR KIA. HYUNDAI KIA <<<<<<<<< ANY CAR MANUFACTURER

no they are really improving. You don't have to be afraid of buying Korean nowadays, especially for the price. You get a lot of car for the money.
And because Kia was bought by Hyundai in 2000, Kia is also as good.
look at this study by JD powers, you'll be impressed.

we owned a 1988 hyundai excel gls, bought new. It had over 200,000 miles when it was totaled by a red-light runner. It had the original engine, clutch, transmission and was trouble-free. We now own a 05 elantra with over 60,000 trouble free miles.

I don't know much about cars but I own a Hyundai Tiburon with 260,000 miles.
The only problem I had was a Power window that shorted out.
