It comes from the concept of the trinity, of three in one, separated into the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. What your friend is saying is that it doesn't matter what they're called, they're simply called that to denote the differences between them in each part. It's simply to relate to them better that they are referred to as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and because the names have metaphorical value. What your friend is saying is that what is important is the idea of the Trinity and the three parts; if they were called the Toaster Oven, the Blender, and That Doohicky That Nobody Knows What It Is, it wouldn't be any different, they would still be the God of three-in-one.

You are correct! he is not the toaster oven and the toaster oven could not save you. Jesus is the perfect Son of God who literally overcame sin and death for all who accept the atonement.

The toaster over is quite hot, you know. Many people probably think that this means wonderful, as in cool. However, when I say "god, the toaster oven", it is usually after I burn myself, and then I say "god, the toaster oven is hot". I am not sure why I tell this to god, as she must already know. The FSM works in mysterious ways, and the toaster oven is a great place to work leftovers.

The answer lies in the (true) nature of God; he is a TRIune being, meaning that there are three persons in the Godhead. If you look at numerically, the first is the Father, the second the SON, and the third the Holy Spirit/Ghost. That is why he is called the Son of God. The Fatherhood/sonship that seems to be your point of confusion came about due to the incarnation [Latin: 'to become flesh'] when the second person of the TRInity agreed with the first and third person [in their respective eternal spiritual states] to become flesh, namely in the person of Immanuel, meaning 'God with us.'
BTW, this is NOT a Roman Catholic explanation either, since they [the RC church] actually have a 4-person deity, when Mary is included, which is a QUADrinity.
1 John 5:7
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

I believe that Jesus was literally the Son of God too. the toaster oven doesn't seem like it makes sense, 'cause it doesn't sound like an analogy. I think he was just saying "po-tay-to, po-tah-to" in a sense, saying "that's just one way of calling him, just a name".

it's all an unprovable myth anyway.
no more, no less provable than the existence of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
so, you can make god a toaster over, or a coffee cup. whatever you like.

It is a myth. It may be real or not, its just things in the world we may never find out. My mom used to tell me that story before and she agreed that it was a myth.

You are exactly right in your belief. Jesus and God are two separate beings. Jesus is his son, sent to die for mankind and do for man what he could not do for himself; answer the demands of eternal justice. Thus, through Christ, we can be forgiven because our "debt has been paid."
