I have ran out of gas before in the same vehicle and i have never had any problem just adding gas and it would start.
This time, it just doesnt seem to be getting any gas and wont kick over. I refuse to believe you have to buy a new fuel pump every time you run out of gas. Back in the day, you could just unscrew the big round thing in the middle of the engine and pour some gas in it to prime it up. (ok yes, I'm female and redneck:) lol I realize there seems to be a pattern here about running out of gas I promise to work on. in the meantime, can anyone tell me EXACTLY other options to try before having to call the dealership to be ripped off Again!! Please, also , blonde. really in trouble. haha

First off; take off the air cleaner, put a little gas into the large opening, if it starts then you need a fuel pump. If it does not then possibly a fuel pump relay.

Well guess what, if people would learn to monitor their gauges they would know when they are low on fuel and either not drive the vehicle until you can refuel it, or stop at a gas station on the way to work, home, or wherever you might be going.

Basically what happens when you run a newer vehicle that has fuel injection and in turn electric fuel pumps out of fuel is that your depriming the fuel pump for one, and 2 the fuel in the tank actually helps cool the pump, which is why its recommended not running below 1/4 of a tank so what happened is you continually trying to get that extra mile from that empty tank burned up your fuel pump by not only taking away the pump's cooling fluid (fuel) but also sucking up any impurities from the bottom of the tank and thus clogging the fuel filter also.

As for running out of fuel its pretty simple every vehicle has a fuel gauge, try looking at it every time you go anywhere.

I'm not trying to be mean, I just don't understand why some people continually make the same mistakes even after being told, or having to fork out tons of money to fix their problem(s) or both of the above.

It would help to know what year it is,useful info like is it fuel injected is a V6 or in line 6.The in line six if it's fuel injected can still be primed by putting gas down the intake, just remove the big black rubber hose that's connected to it.However I am sure that you have been lectured on this before, running the tank low on fuel burns fuel pumps out because there is no lubrication or cooling for the pump, any vehicle with an in tank pump should not be run below 1/4 tank for this reason.

If by pouring gas(petrol) down the intake and it starts but stops almost as fast you will need a fuel pump.

I really cannot believe that running out of gas killed the pump, particularly if it was recently replaced. Is low fuel good for them on any car..no, but will it kill it to run out of fuel..No. If this recently was replaced, is it in warranty.
If you switch on the ignition, but NOT crank it..do you hear a whining sound from the back of the jeep. If yes, it IS NOT dead. The sound will only happen for a few seconds and shut off.
Can you check the wires to the pump near the tank and see if they are getting electricity for those few seconds? If not, check, as above, the fuel relay...need to know more details on year and engine to go farther.
Good Luck,

if the pump won't restart then it probably is bad, there is no real way to prime these pumps. running out of gas can shorten the life of the pump.also jeep has improved the fuel level sending unit that comes with the pump and that will probabaly stopthe running out of gas problem

if you want to check it to see if it's a bad fuel pump, first check fuses. if none are blown, i unscrew the tip off my propane torch and add a rubber tube to it. then put the tube in the intake(without the air cleaner) and try to start it. it won't go above idle but if it starts you can narrow it down to a fuel pump, pressure regulator, filter, no gas, etc...
