Is the percentage of the Atheist population in America still at 8 to 9%?

Andy, I didn't ask anything about Christians. I am asking a simple question because I really thought the percentage would be much higher. I am curious as to why if people are atheist why are they ashamed to say they are. I feel like the percentage is higher and that people just don't admit it.

Moutain, atheists profess to be Christians to avoid persecution? I am who I am and I will tell everyone. And, an atheist professing to be a Christian trumps them being an atheist imo.

Glitterkitty, your name made me giggle. Relgion or no religion should never be brought up in employment, that is crazy. I have worked in many places and religion or no religion has never been an issue, that is unprofessional to say the least. But, I think that could go both ways.

Mountain, this was a simple question and I find it funny that people come out swinging. Sure I do not get being an Atheist in any way shape or form. . .I don't pretend to. Although I have dealt with people who have issues with me being a Christian, well I don't care I am still who I am. And, if I have to pretend to be something else my belief in who I am is shaky and I am in the wrong crowd. If I have to be ashamed of what I believe then it is not worth believing. That is my opinion. But, seriously the question was just simply what is the "outed" percentage of atheist and that was all.

I'm not ashamed to say I'm an atheist, but I could see where it would be not a smart thing to do. There are a lot of companies in this country that are christian-owned. Saying you are an atheist might just cause waves and cost someone their job. Luckily I work in a research group where atheism is the norm, but I used to work for christian and jewish owned businesses where it would not be a good idea to "come out of the closet" as an atheist if you valued your job.

I think the number is far greater than people admit. Atheists are quite persecuted in the US(isn't that supposed to be Christians?)And I think many who are "practicing atheists"for want of a better term, are "professed Christians"for convenience sake

edit:Sparkles, you don't get it,do you?You can say what you are,an atheist will lose "standing" if they do. I am openly atheist, but I know many who lead a life no different than me,but for the sake of "contacts" will SAY they are a Christian. It just goes to show WHO is on the wrong end of the persecution stick

I had never thought there was a need to make my Atheism more low key, and I don't.

But after G Bush Sr. said something along the lines of, 'Atheists should not be citizens' I can understand why people in certain walks of life might choose to not make a huge point of it.

An outrageous and typically dumb comment from a member of the dumbest family ever to have authority in this country.

A lot of church people are atheists, but they stick with what feels good.

I dont know, But i think it would be really hard to be atheist, i mean to believe in nothing at all is so depressing. i think most people who claim atheism are really agnostic, meaning they dont really know what they believe or choose not to follow any set belief system. Honestly, if you dont believe anything who do you cry out to when ur angry or at death's door? even the hedonist must believe something greater than self.

Everyone is an Atheist, actually.

It's just that some are a bunch of delusional freaks.
