First question is what sort of Robot you wish to design?

1) Robotic vehicle
2) Robotic Manipulator
3) Legged Robot
4) Material Handling Robot
5) Game playing Robot
....... list goes on


1) First thing is that you create a rough mechanical design

2) Study Kinematics and dynamics of the plant(robot)

3) Work on your requirements like motor torques/sensory networks, capabilities, then design mechanical system iincluding all the gears

4) Design Control Electronics - microcontroller based controls/ encoders/ power mosfets/ data acquisition/ pc control/ remote control / software programming

5) Test and optimize your design

go to the local library, and look for books on basic robot construction. There should be at least one that will help you actually build one.

Get a bout 3 grad students working for you who know mechanics, servomechanisms, contrl systems, microprocessors, Ato D and D to A converters and a really good programmer and get to work.
