Good Luck. I was offered one, the simple idea that a needle is passed into the liver seems fine. However the risks are what put me off. I had no problems with bone marrow biopsy.

The biopsy helps diagnose a number of liver diseases. The procedure also helps in the assessment of the stage (early, advanced) of liver disease. This is especially important in hepatitis C infection.
In addition, the biopsy helps detect:
* cancer
* infections
* the cause of an unexplained enlargement of the liver
* abnormal levels of liver enzymes that have been detected in blood tests.
Please see the web page for more details on Liver biopsy.

I did mine about 6 years ago. I was into yoga breathing so didn't do anesthesia, which I wouldn't do now. They gave me a local. Man, did it burn and hurt. But it was over fast. No real pain after but I was very aware of my liver in that sport for about 18 months.
Oddly, I've been aware of my liver lately. I'm seeing a Chinese herbalist accupuncturist, and had the same pain today when she "targeted" my liver for the first time. Ugh, still she is amazing, always palpatating my liver and working with it. Seems to understand it in a much different way than my doctor.
Good luck.

This is a link that may answer your question.

You can asked to be sedated while this is
done and also they usually numb the area
with Lidocaine before it is performed.
My husband has had a couple of these biopsies.
They usually go through the right side, between the ribs...but it is also performed going through
the neck area if people have bleeding problems..
When his was done, the needle was similar
to being spring loaded and it went in and out
very fast and was over in just a very short time
period. Alot depends on who does the
procedure and how well trained they are in it.
Hope this is of some help.
