You don't have to, but you should.
Usually you round up to the next dollar and add one more.
Example: If the fare is $6.60. Round up to $7 and add one more: $8.
That's a pretty common way to tip. If your fare gets above $10 (longer trip), you'll want to tip about %15.

I just came back from there yesterday. Tipping goes hand in hand with the term appreciation. New Yorkers are generally very friendly, and by tipping it is a sign of gratitude - the service they have offered. Hence the tip should reflect your satisfaction.

you don't HAVE to, but I would...kinda, well REALLY rude not to.it's just like the salon or a restaurant or the bell hop or towel guy or anything else....you should tip.
